Hope things get better Shane, I can't stay long again, just enough to say hi and post a little.

I have had the opportunity (while cleaning) to listen a bit to the Rick Dees shows. I like Casey's better, but some fun music to listen to anyway.

Hmm, this week they did:

I believe they repeated Rick Dees June 1988 the previous week.

I cheated. I looked up the playlist for the AT40 show for Sunday on the 80's. It's a "newcomers" special where Casey plays the biggest first hits of well-known acts from that decade. I couldn't help but take a look. I don't think I've heard this one before, and it does sound interesting. Good tuneage here...

AT 40 5/14/77 - Monkees mention: as of '77, the Monkees and the Platters held the record for shortest time it took for American groups to have a single to go to #1 on the chart (3 weeks time) for "I'm a Believer". The record holder up until that time was the Beatles with "Can't Buy Me Love" getting to number 2 in 2 weeks of charting.

Hey Marn, I keep hearing about how they're going to be playing some of the Rick Dees countdowns from the 80's on Saturdays starting in June. Unlike Casey's show, which used the Billboard charts, Rick used Radio & Records. I also hear that XM is acquiring a new batch of original Casey AT40's to supplement their roster of rotating shows, as well.

I could not remember what they (Mann / Weil) wrote for the Monkees, so Googled it and this:

I missed the Styx story, Shane. That is cool. They had 2 hits in that week's top 40. I really dig Mr. Roboto though it has a very dated sound nowadays.

I don't either. Neat story about how Styx's "Kilroy was here" was solar powered. They were "going green" before it was PC to do so. Kind of a neat comment that the guitar player made about that being the "embryo of the next big thing".

AT40 05/1974 - only listened a bit, but don't recall the date.

AT40 05/21/83 - a pretty good one. I starting writing them down the countdown on a near weekly business around June 1983

Neat trivia on Sérgio Mendes' "Never gonna let you go"- it was written by Cynthia Weil / Barry Mann who wrote a Monkee tune...

Interesting, Shane, I didn't know about Wendy Carlos at all, so a collaboration with Weird Al would be interesting to hear, I think.

Yea, I thought of you when I heard the Chicago tune. I thought their own remake of 25 6 to 4 had charted in the 80s, but it didn't even reach into the Top 40. Where I lived at the time, it got lots of airplay and in some ways I prefer it over their much more successful...

Even more stranger and/or trivial is that there is a collaborative effort between Wendy Carlos and none other than "Weird Al" Yankovic out there from 1988. It's basically a retooling of two classical compositions, Prokofiev's "Peter And The Wolf", and Saint-Saiens/Nash's "Carnival Of The Animals". Carlos provides the musical score, (all done through synthesizers and computer programming--really quite remarkable), and Yankovic provides the erstwhile...

AT40 - 4/28/79 - these are OK, but nothing great. Disco and late 80s pop, not my favorite. One very odd trivial mention on this show was some artist (synthesizer music) named Walter Carlos had a sex change and became Windy Carlos. I thought that was an odd mention.

I liked the "Where is he now" of Alice Cooper. Still playing with dolls, but now it's his little daughter. Alice is playing here in Oshkosh for the last week of Waterfest in August. I wonder what that'll be like. I'm curious.

AT 40 - 04/08/78 - the BeeGees had the top 2 spots. Big disco year.

AT 40 - 04/11/81 - I had several 45s from this countdown. Terry Gibbs, Juice Newton, Dolly Parton, Eric Clapton ... some great tunes here. MTV went on the air in August of this year....

Interesting show from '82 today. It was kind of neat to hear the theme from Magnum PI by Mike Post in the countdown, as well as the Beatles' movie song medley. It's easy to forget, too, how country music tended to cross over to the pop chart in the 80's. In this countdown we had Willie Nelson singing "You Were Always On My Mind" and the Oak Ridge Boys doing "Bobbie Sue".

Nope, you're absolutely right. There was an extended dance mix made, but I have never heard it on radio. I do have it on a rather obscure Japanese compilation, but it's a mix that is indeed very hard to locate.

I will start another AT 40 thread. I think Shane was mostly into this, not sure about the rest of you. You guys can listen for free on music.aol.com and search for XM Station 7 on Saturday from noon-3 ET and on Sunday on Channel 8 from noon-3pm ET. On channel 7, they replay AT 40 shows from 1970-1979 and on Channel 8, shows from 1980-1988.
