You bet I love The Doors. That group is one of my alltime favorites. I credit Jim Morrison for inspiring me to start writing poetry back in 1981 and now, almost 25 years later,I have written over 5,000 poems.
Jim was a very complex person. When he was in the room,he dominated that room. No one had a stronger presence that Jim did. Take a look at some Doors publicity photos and it's like Jim is looking through you. I first became a Doors fan in about 1978,at age 11,when my interest in The Beach Boys began to wane and I heard "Break On Through" on the radio one day back then. I collect Doors material also,be it Audio,Video,Magazines,T-Shirts...whatever. The best stuff is the stuff that isn't available. I have an interview with Jim where the interviewer asks him if he minds people making bootleg copies of a book of song lyrics by the Doors and Jim said,"I don't care, just as long as they get the words right." Sotet,if you get a chance and wanna check out some past threads in this section, look up the one thread I did on July 2nd called "Jim Morrison 34th Anniversary". I think you may find it interesting and I would like to know your opinions on it since it deals with Jim's death. Peace & Love Always, Ray |

I got into the Doors around 1987 or so while in high school. What really peaked my interest was MTV playing the long lost Hollywood Bowl concert from 1968 (which Harrison Ford directed as a film student!!). I was mesmerized. I went out and bought vinyl and boots (and paid lots of $$$) ouch!!!
The Doors sound is something else. I even got to see Jim's grave in Paris in Pere La Chaise back in 1991 - I was disappointed at all the graffiti, but it is worth a visit for an avid fan. Jim was a very complex personality, I even posted a few times at the offical Doors forum, but it isn't as much fun as it is here. I admired his intellect, I just get kinda down about how hedonistic he was. Ya know?? |

I believe Jim's Hedonistic tendancies are a result of the demons that drove and posessed him.
He is missed. |

I've been a Doors fan since I was 13, I think. My cousins Sharon and Anne were into The Doors and they dressed all the time as hippies (this was in the early 80's) so I really enjoyed goin over to my aunt uncle's house to hang out with my koola cousin's. At any rate, to make a longer story even shorter, one day we went over to their house and there on the couch in their bedroom was the book, No One Here Get's Out Alive. Of course, it caught my attention cuz of the picture of Jim on the cover. So I started asking questions about this Jim Morrison and they pulled out their Doors albums. Even let me borrow a few. So that's how I was introduced to The Doors. I became hooked after that point and the more I learned about the band and Jim, the more I got the impression that Jim was more than just a sex symbol. He was a poet and only used that "image" to attract attention. Unfortunately, it worked all too well and he had trouble with his fans taking his poetry seriously. That's why I feel he grew the beard and got fat. JMHO.
Okay so enough of my yip yapping about this. Don't want to bore anybody with my views on The Doors. PS: don't believe everything you read in NOHGOA.... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

by all means, keep going, Cindy.
This thread is about the Doors I love their music either way, however, I am not into the Doors of the 21st century, just no interest... And you are right Cindy, take what you read about Jim Morrison in particular with a grain of salt. I have read many of the books on him, and I have my doubts, especially in that newer book called Jim Morrison: Life, Death, Legend by Davis. |

The books about Jim are designed to do one thing;Sell Copies. The more gossip in the book, the better it sells.
The line between truth and myth on Jim Morrison is blurred badly in alot of places. Did Jim really do this or say that? Who knows. Jim might of,there's no solid evidence, though. I do believe that Jim became disgusted with the "Young Lion" image of him (the one from 1967). So,he gained weight, grew a beard and wasn't a sex symbol anymore. Jim was relieved, right? His poetry would be taken seriously, right? Nope. Jim didn't think about all the critics out there that don't care about whether he's a sex symbol or fat with a beard, they just slammed his work. It's a shame that Jim's poetry didn't really get recognized until years after Jim died. "The Lords and The New Creatures" became a Best Seller after Jim died, not before. If only Jim's work would of gotten it's fair shake while he was alive to enjoy it. Peace & Love Always, Ray |

well put, Ray.
Jim probably lived in the wrong period of time for what his desires were (with poetry - Jim Morrison is a very interesting and controversial subject. What do you think of John Densmore's stance on not letting the 2 other Doors use the Doors name while they tour? - Honestly, there are arguments on both sides, but I think he should let it go and not sue.

I would like to address how right you are about Jim living in the wrong time, sotet. Back then,he was slammed by the press for his poetry and 99% of the reviews of his poetry were not good.
Nowadays it's a different story. A certain bimbo who will remain nameless (but had a hit called "You Were Meant For Me") issued a book of her own poetry a few years ago and it got a kinds of praise and accolaides. Sorry, but a friend of mine has that book and I read it and it's just "Twee" as we like to call it. No depth to her work, just fluff and twee. Jim would of probably found it amusing that her junk got all kinds of praise nowadays. I'll betcha that if she woulda issued that book of poetry back in 1969,people would of thought she was another "Melanie" clone (Roller Skates, anyone?). The other thing you mentioned about Densmore sueing Ray and Robby and the court action not allowing Ray and Robby to use the name "The Doors" currently is a very touchy subject. We all know that John and Ray have not gotten along for many many years. And this latest thing is an extension of that. Now,I'm not a fan of a band getting back together and replacing an irreplacable member of that band and going on the road. Paul,George and Ringo could of gotten a Lennon lookalike to take John's place back in 1988 when they were offered a large sum of money to do so,but didn't. I see both sides of the Doors' arguement, though. Ray and Robby just want to go out there and play old Doors songs and have a good time like the old days and,of course, make a few bucks while they're at it. And Densmore, well,he believes the Doors died with Jim Morrison and should not be revived like this. It's really touchy. Would I go to see this new incarnation of The Doors if they came to a place nearby? Maybe, just out of curiosity. Whatever they decide to do,I wish them all the luck in the world. Peace & Love Always, Ray |

Interesting points you both made-Sotet and Ray. I agree though that a band should not carry on without the main ingredient missing from the band line up.
As for Ray and Robby, I feel that they are merely cashing in on Jim's name. Easy money. But The Doors are not the Doors in my opinion. I for one, would not go to see a re-incarnated Doors band. I mean, unless Jim was there, there'd be no way I want to see the band. The story of Jim Morrison is like a big jigsaw puzzle, I think. The pieces are out there for us to decipher..we just need to figure out which pieces are the truth and which ones are fabricated. Let's break the ice.Too serious here. Have you ever seen the picture of what Jim Morrison might look like if he were alive today? It's a parody of those GAP ads...lemme see if I can find it: ![]() Here's a koola Doors piccy- ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I love the Doors group shot. 1966,am I right? Looks like it was taken about the same time they did that photo shoot on the pier in Venice standing behind those old ladies who were sitting on a bench.
Hmmm,Jim now would of just celebrated his 62nd birthday earlier this month. That Gap ad is a hoot. You know,it's funny, but the Doors concerts at The Felt Forum on 1-17-1970 and 1-18-1970 are some of their best concerts. Jim was in good spirits. Sure his face was chubby, but who cares? He shaved for those shows and sang fabulously. I think the mood of the Doors concerts in the first few months of 1970 were pretty upbeat. Peace & Love Always, Ray |

Hmmm.......*scratches head*yeah I always thought that Doors group shot was from around 1966 or so.
Jim was in good spirits during those Felt Forum shows. When you hear him at the Seattle gig, it's the complete opposite. He just sounds absolutely horrible and like he doesn't want to be there. I'll get that to ya soon. Hehehehe......that other pic is rather funny, ain't it? Here is a pic of the guys from Murray the K's show in 1967: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

my favorite live audio is Hollywood Bowl, but I haven't heard a lot of the later concerts from 69 and 70, so maybe I am missing out on some good stuff.
Yea, actually I kinda like Jim with some weight on, like when they were down in Mexico in 69, I think and he had that thick beard. I thought his look was kinda groovy, but it did have to grow on me. I think the photos are in Doors Illustrated. Anyway, an adonis he was intelligent, too just had a lot of issues .... more Doors talk, please |

I'll always lean toward the bearded Jim. One reason is it was him,not an image of him.
Plus,he was in control of his image by 1969. I guess the Doors concerts were either a hit or miss thing. One night Jim might be in top form, but the very next night he might be in a lousy mood and the show would suffer as a result. It's incredible to listen to some audio of Doors shows recorded just days apart and to hear the different atmosphere. One thing I liked alot about the 1970 concerts was the Medley's that they did in each show. Alot of rarities surfaced then. I found it amusing that in July 1969 at one of the Aquarius shows,Jim was just sitting on a stool onstage doing a soundcheck with the guys and he was wearing his Engineer-Bill pants,a dress-shirt and aviator glasses and people in the audience as they filed into the arena didn't recognize him. They were used to the clean shaven Young Lion. I have a recent issue of "Guitar Legends" magazine with Jim on the cover and it's all Doors stuff inside and in one of the articles,Robby says that the largest portion of live Doors recordings are bootlegs and the quality is not to his liking. Obviously he's not a collector. Peace & Love Always, Ray |

I wonder sometimes if the guys in these bands ever collect their own bootlegs. I guess you are right, Ray about Robby Krieger.
I recall Micky likes to collect Monkees stuff. The Doors were great. I even enjoyed some of the material on their post Morrison albums: Other Voices and Full Circle. Ships with Sails and I'm Hor*** I'm Stoned are among my favs. I enjoyed John Densmore's book, but I haven't read Ray Manzarek's (just a bit here and there in the book store) |

Well I for one find this conversation refreshing knowing that I won't be bashed for saying how I feel about Jim. I wasn't implying you Sotet about the seriousness of this thread. Honest. I just thought I'd throw in that GAP pic of Jim for a laugh in this thread. It's good to laugh during a serious moment..hehehehe!
Glad you liked the link and the piccys. Uh.......no he's not a collector. Heck, they wanted over $75.00 dollars for their Boot Yer Butt CD. Another way for them to cash in on the money. I don't have that CD for that reason. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Yea, buying music ads up quick. I don't have the Rhino Homemades for that reason ... one day, I will get them .....
Do either of you dig the Doors of the 21st Century? Also, cindy, that website about that girl on the Sunset Strip who knew Jim, interesting, what she has to say ..... My life was so different than that, so for the most part I do not relate. |

I have the "Other Voices" and "Full Circle" albums on vinyl. I saw the CD where they put both albums on one CD,but I didn't get it.
While I don't mind the "Morrison-Free" albums,I find alot is missing without him. In fact,I often think of those two albums as being by another group alltogether. |

Oh, I didn't know that. Jim's mother ... Been a while since reading up on things Morrison, online.
I don't think Jim ever saw his parents after he got famous ... I like Amazon book reviews and some people (avid fans) really tear into Manzarek's book there about how ambivalent Ray was towards the Morrison legend. I need to buy that book, eventually. Well, you all take care, I am about to sign off for the night. |

Ray Manzarek was always the one who tried to keep Jim's legend alive by saying "He may not be dead."
And that went on for years. I think that's one bone of contention between he and Densmore. John didn't like Manzarek claiming Jim was alive just to build a myth. I have both John's and Ray's books. Both are interesting and must-reads. Hmmmm, now if only Jim would write one. Peace & Love Always, Ray |
