I find this very sad and disgusting that they are doing this: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080421/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/military_felons I mean my father and brother were Marines, however, they were never, ever a convicted felon. It's downright awful!

Unfortunately I find it to be a little disturbing too. I just think that some of these criminals--not all--but some may do more harm than good. I wonder if these types could be the ones that were shown torturing dogs, for one thing. There were a couple of stories like that in the past year or so--some were throwing rocks and tormenting a dog with a broken leg, a more recent video showed up where one supposedly threw a puppy off a cliff (some people suspected it was a fake video, but I don't know what became of that?). They were laughing. It would be good if it got them to do something positive. I guess we can only think positively and hope for the best.

Elaine, I can understand what you are saying. But in my mind and from the background I come from, 'you do the crime, you pay the time... in jail' (no ifs, ands, ors, or buts about it. You stay in jail). I don't understand how they can possibly 'enlist' these people in the first place. I find this quite disturbing as does daydreambeliever. Yes, what if they are the kind that love torturing people. Innocent people come back from this war with PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) and it is a gut-wrenching disorder to see people go through. I know my father has it from the Vietnam War and has been harming my mother for years in his sleep. (I only found out a year ago at Christmas mind you). Imagine these psychopathic killers coming back from this war with PTSD? I dread to think of it. We will have mass murderers loose in our neighborhoods, afraid to go out of our homes for fear of these people attacking us, etc. I am a very shy person as it is and I have enough trouble going out of my house for fear someone will blow my head off, let alone do anything else. But that is where I am coming from. We can all believe what we want to believe. Positive attitude I cannot even imagine at this point in time. But to all those that can, it's a blessing. I value everyone's opinions here mind you. I am not opposed to your view Elaine so don't think that at all. I just have a very hard time dealing with the fact that they are sending 'convicted felons' into the service to fight for this Country. Who knows, maybe it's a fake article or something. Maybe it isn't real, I don't know. It probably is. I just know that you really can not trust people like this to do the right thing, so, it's hard to imagine what could happen. Someone that is truly crazy--who's to say they would not turn on their own troops? I don't know, it sounds scary and I understand your feelings. I just try to think positively. But I also try not be naive about it either. I didn't mean to send a message like that. I do find it disturbing as I wrote earlier. I mean, sex criminals, someone guilty of horrendous crimes such as incest and rape--isn't it true that they are never rehabilitated, are often obsessed with this kind of thing. I do disagree that we should not have to go to the prisons to enlist felons but I agree that the military may be a way for some of them to get their lives straight and contribute something positive to society. Before we get into knee jerk reactions over a news story that was originally intended to stir up controversy... I will submit this to you folks. The reason this is sad is because we have too many upright "Good Citizens" that say they love this country that are just doggoned comfortable with their lifestyles, their Iphones, Plasma TVs, Wii & XBox's SUVs and other toys and their interpretation of the Freedoms those current male & female servicemembers and their parents and grandparents fought for in generations past. The reason the military is getting the help of felons is because no one else has the courage or the guts to step up to the plate to serve thier country. THAT is what is sad. It is too easy to let your friend go off to serve while you party & play with your PS3. It's too easy to let someone else make a commitment so you can enjoy your PS3 The one who offer his or her personal service to their country is selfless. The one who offers lip service to their country is selfish. The U.S. Military has been a Volunteer force since the end of the VietNam Conflict. No one is forcing any one to serve in the Army Air Force Navy or Marines. I disagree with a draft just to fill a hot spot with bodies. A draft is way too expensive, however I feel that the United States should bring back some sort of a 2 year "Compulsory Service to the Nation" for young people once they graduate from High School or College. That Service to the nation could be the military, Homeland security or The Peace Corps! Yes folks the Peace Corps is still around. Not every service means combat boots & bayonets. I feel that if folks got a couple of years taste of service to their country & others and visit other nations & lands & peoples intead of taking in what the Talking heads and the politicians on the 52 inch LCD are feeding them, they would have a greater appreciation for our country and quite possibly would then become more interested in trying to make a real difference in this country. I will offer one more thought. Some arguments in the previous posts offer the idea that if we bring all these prisoners in that we will have trouble in our military units and they will also be menaces to people in the host nations they are serving in. That may or may not be true. I am in the Far East and almost once a month we have serious incidents involving U.S Service Members and Local Nationals. Recently in Okinawa we had several cases of School girls getting raped by Marines. Okinawa has the largest contingent of Marines ouside of the US. Recently in Yokusuka Japan a Sailor murdered a cab driver because he didnt want to pay a fare. Japan & Okinawa are the safest most peaceful countries I have ever been in Here in Korea we have soldiers committing heinous acts as well. All of these individuals had no prior criminal records. You can possibly blame it on PTSD but not all of these kids over here ever served in Iraq or Afghanistan so that blows that theory out the window with me. I believe that although the enlisting of felons in not a good idea but if we cant get "good" citizens to belly up to the bar what will we do? Also consider this. (ok...2 more thoughts) What if the current war was in your own back yard? It could still happen. Would you be willing to step up to fight or let someone else protect you, and if you would allow someone else to protect you, would you really care if they were prior felon convictions? *"It is not the critic who counts: not the man who points out how* the strong man stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done better. I must say your way of thinking is a very good way of thinking about it all. I never thought of it that way. That is horrible that Marines are raping the schoolgirls. Just awful. My brother and father were in the Marines... my dad in Vietnam and my brother served many years ago as well. I cannot even fathom what you soldiers have seen or have had to do for your Countries. You have given a much clearer view at things too. I know one day when I was working at drugstore, a young woman maybe in her late teens was telling me she was joining the Marines and going to Iraq. That was a very selfless thing for her to do and for anyone to do, I do agree. God Bless Each and Every One and Their Families in the Armed Services Nationwide. I think my mind is just so full of how luxurious our prisons are in Britain at the moment. It's been in the newspapers a lot how inmates are growing fat on good food and drugs are so cheap that they're being smuggled out of prison to sell on the streets, and how they get lots of luxuries like TV sets.
