I who hate to exercise, have started walking with a coworker on a local trail 3 days a week. The length of it is 3.7 miles. Another friend and I just joined a
gym this week too. I went yesterday for the first time and are my muscles sore! I am so out of shape! Another problem is I love to binge on sweets when I get
home from work every day. It's kind of like people who have a glass of wine when they get home or a cigarette. If only I could get that under control!

Ohh I really want to but I just don't seem to have the energy to come home from work (at 7.30pm) and then do some sort of exercise - because I'm
normally wanting food when I come in. My boyfriend is really showing me up this summer!

I don't think I would feel like it either at 7:30. Fortunately I get home at 3 pm. I still have to force myself to do it, though!

I want to start walking again. I lost 52 pounds last year, but I've put on a few again. I have a hard time getting motivated to go out after work, as well.
I get off at 4, but I don't get home until around 5. (Sometimes I walk home, and that's where my exercise comes from, but if I do that every day, I
lose money on my bus pass. It's a weird situation....)
I really want to thin down my legs and my tummy- my legs and my bottom have always been where I gain the most weight..... but I took care of my bum last year!

I'm already in shape...........extremely round and
bumpy is a shape? Right?
Seriously, I'm at an impass - I need to walk to loose weight, but I can't walk because of my bad knees. Last appointment with surgeon didn't go well - the top of my Tibia is starting to degenerate on my right knee. It causes a twisting feeling in the entire bone - long stints of walking are very detrimental right now.

I'm in pretty good shape, but I constantly have to fight my sweet tooth and genetics. Generally I teach water aerobics 2-3 times a week and the other days
I do about 40 minutes on the eliptical machine plus weights. And then there's the daily dog walking regimen, usually about 2 miles. I know I'll never
be a hard body or anything, but I know I'm doing what's best for my health.

First off, Mare what a wonderful thread to start! Second off, congratulations to everyone on their exercise, dieting, and weight loss goals. Petey 52 pounds?
That is awesome! Keep up the great work!
I don't know if anyone has read my updated profile, but I started contortion training at home. There is a link to what I am using on my profile page called, "The Contortionist's Handbook." Basically, I am doing stretching. So far since I have started stretching and when I was doing rollerskating (haven't done that in ages as my friend doesn't want to go with me anymore and I won't go alone anymore), well I have dropped two pants sizes. I have bad knees too daydrmblvr so I can relate to the pain. I have a habit of cracking my knees, however, when I crack them too much it feels like my legs are on backwards which is very painful. However, sitting at the computer I have found easy ways to stretch. I will share. One way is if your computer chair reclines backwards, lean back on it, keep your toes on floor pushing chair backwards and you can do abdominal crunches without hurting your back. I have done those and my tummy is finally shrinking. (Praise God). Also, if you sit fairly forward on your chair and arch your back backwards keeping your feet on the ground, that will give you a good stretch in your back. That is how I am doing my back stretches. I'm not following the Contortionist's Handbook to a T. I'm kinda of working along those same lines, but doing my own modifications to fit my level. I have been sedentary for years so I have lost a lot of my flexibility and am slowly gaining it back. Just my update on my progress. Again everyone

Kudos (and I don't mean the weird YUKU kudos) to all of you who are exercising! Any kind of movement or activity is great-but be sure not to over-do!
LuAnne, have you ever tried water walking? That's kind of a big trend right now for classes, but anyone can do it if they have access to a pool. It's more exercise than it sounds but it's so easy on the joints than 95% of the population can do it! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I need to exercise because I have high cholesterol and I am VERY out of shape. I get out of breath on short walks. I'm trying to do very little at a
time. I'm going to try swimming this summer. I haven't done that in years. I'm very thin even though I eat a lot, so my doctor told me to get
bloodwork done. I've been putting it off. Angela

Angela, you are not idiotic! Please do not put yourself down. I am very out of shape too. I know my picture in ML doesn't look like it because I hide my
weight down, but I am very large, well in the 250+ range. But like flylady says weight is only a number, not what we are truly reflected as.
Most of my weight came when I went on the birth control pills because I have horrible menstrual cycles and I gained over 100 pounds on them. I finally took myself off of them and will never, ever take them again. I'm still trying to lose that 100 pounds that I gained. It's touch. I would absolutely love to be thin. My goal is to be in a size 10. One day. Right now I'm in a size 22-24 and I lost two pant sizes. I could probably fit into a size 20 if I pushed it. However, I cannot wear blue jeans. I wear knit pants. I have no energy either Angela. I mean since I live alone my house should be absolutely spotless. It's not. It's nowhere near spotless because I went through a phase of 'I don't give a s*&t about anything and threw stuff everywhere.' Now I don't know where to begin, hence why I joined flylady, as she helps people get organized in their homes. Please do not knock yourself down darling. Same for everyone here. We are all unique in all different shapes and sizes. Let me share with you something that I wrote. I think you all will see what I've been going through and even some of you might relate. Hang on one second please. (I know I have shared this with some ML friends of mine before, but this might help anyone to see they are not alone). The following is a review that I wrote on Amazon.com about a VHS tape that I have called, "Kathy Smith's Pregnancy Workout." You might snicker and say a non-pregnant woman is using a pregnancy video. Well, yes I did and my explanation is below as to why. I hope you all enjoy reading it. I definitely recommend this video. It's very hard to find, but I found mine at the local Salvation Army Thrift Store. One man's junk is another man's treasure and I treasure this dearly. 6 of 7 people found the following review helpful: Wonderfully fun and exciting, March 19, 2006 By writer2be (IL) - See all my reviews Now first let me explain something. I am not pregnant and I have never been pregnant. I bought this video because I wanted to see what a pregnancy video looked like and that I knew it was going to be gentle, but yet a good workout. This video was very good. Kathy Smith is very good in explaining the routines and modifications for the routines. She has a calming attitude and is very reassuring. You don't feel threatened by her. I am overweight and have bad knees so I am using this video to help me to lose my weight in a gentle way without putting a lot of stress on my joints. It is a good aerobic workout for beginners. It has three separate aerobic dance routines to it with a warmup in the beginning and then toning exercises followed by relaxation exercises. One thing I loved about this video was that it was doing the routines to '80s music. Well I grew up in the 80's era, so it was like a trip down memory lane for me. I really enjoyed it very much. I have read other reviewers saying that they hated it because of the music or because she went into detail about taking deep "cleansing" breaths. I loved the music and the routines were fun and easy to catch on too. I felt extremely well after my workout and I would continue to use it daily. I loved it. And another thing was, all the ladies in the class looked like they were really enjoying it themselves. One of the ladies cracked me up with how she was really getting into the routines swinging her hips about and everything. That was very encouraging to know that the participants were having fun in the class, as well as how it made me feel watching them having the fun. Exercise should be fun and not feeling like you're going to drop over dead exhausted. What I say to those who commented on negative things, well first off Kathy was only explaining that we all need to "breathe" properly using deep cleansing breathing as what is taught to you in Yoga class. Deep "cleansing" breaths are vital to our everyday living along with good posture. Proper breathing is our most valuable thing we can do to our bodies. It helps to heal our bodies of infection, pain, or whatnot. I, personally, find it to be extremely healthy now that I know how to "breathe" properly. I would recommend this workout to anyone pregnant or non-pregnant who would want gentle exercises to do to help them lose weight or just feel good about themselves. Great job Kathy and all the pictures of the pregnant ladies that were in the video at the end after they had their children were beautiful. Kathy and your little girl, at that time, was so adorable. Great video. I love it dearly. I love you all my beautiful friends. Thank you for blessing me with your love and friendship. Luanne, I wish you all the best in your weightloss/exercising goals, as well as everyone here. Love always, Cheri |

I need to start working out again. My problem is that I work as many hours a week in RETAIL as a possibly can, and there's no set schedule - one day
I'll be there till 10:30 at night, the next day I'll have to BE there at 7:30 or something. It's hard trying to fit in a work out each day because
I'm always doing something different at a different time each day. I'm trying to get better about it, as well as looking for a better job, but it is
HARD when there's no routine. Overall I don't think I LOOK terrible - could definitely stand to lose a few :-P - but overall I don't look awful so
much as I feel awful. Tired, weak, no stamina, energy, or anything. Before I had to work so much I got into working out more regularly, and I felt a lot better
- I want to get to that again! It was great. But it's a LOT harder these days....

Hi Cheri,
That was a good idea getting that video to work out to. At least you knew it would be doable for you starting out. You wrote a nice review for it. It sounds like a lot of you are trying to get in shape and that's good. Monkeemaniac I don't think I look too terrible myself and I really don't feel good at this weight and don't have energy and stamina. If I don't lose a thing but feel better it will be worth the effort. Of course I TOTALLY blew the eating part today at my sister's barbeque! Oh well, I'll start again tomorrow! |

I hope you don't mind a guys point of view on this thread.
Besides doing lawnwork at home once a week,I walk three miles every other day in the morning. I've been doing that walk each spring and summer for many years. After a good walk,I feel so much better and it colors my day. I'm not a calorie counter or anything like that. I just watch what I eat and try to stay active.

I walk, too, at least 3 times a week for 30-45 minutes. I do walking at work and climb stairs. I need to do more, though, but it is a start. I like sweets,
too, but lately, I have been very good about avoiding them for the most part.

I started my routine again after slacking off in the winter. I do 20 to 30 minutes on the treadmill, then 20 minutes on the pilates machine and then 10 to15
minutes on the stationary bike. I also use free weights and love to stretch and do a little yoga. I would love to join a gym but time and money are a factor
so I stick with my little "mini gym" in my home. I would like to exercise everyday, but it usually ends up being about 4 times a week.

I want to get back down to 242. I have been riding my mountain bike to work everyday and watching what I put into my body. As far as eating I tend to over eat
sometimes and i don't eat allot of meat these days either. I don't weigh myself everyday i heard that is not so good to do.

I suppose could walk to work and home again but 14 miles round trip seems an awful lot. I'm not really overweight or anything but I'd just like to be a
bit healthier.

I think that 3 or 4 times a week walking, etc is just fine. The important thing is to keep doing it, right? And weighing yourself every day is BAD! Take it
from me. I just did it today after eating a lot yesterday and I gained weight. I can't let it discourage me though.
And Ray, it is nice to see the guys point of view. I wish my husband was interested in trying to get in better shape. He never tries at all and he is a type 2 Diabetic. It would certainly help. He feels he gets enough exercise on the job, but your body gets used to that activity and you have to give it more, especially us old fogies over 50!

I WISH I could lose 52 lbs!!! I walk a lot and it doesn't help. With no car I have to walk everywhere and I go up and down stairs MANY times a day -
Bedroom up, bathroom, kitchen and computer - down. Nothing helps but the prospect of seeing David and then I starve myself to try to lose. At this age it is
almost impossible, your metabolism changes. A lot of my weight is in my stomach and I HATE it.

Everybody who can walk, be thankful. I can identify with the bad knees, plus I have very bad bunions on both feet that have gotten worse and I just can't
walk more than 10 minutes without very bad pain. This is very aggravating, because five years ago, I was walking about 3 or more miles a day and I lost 60
pounds doing it!
I use the eliptical glider thing as much as I can, but it's not as effective as plain old walking. And Sally, you're right, as you age, your metabolism really slows down. But aerobic exercise is supposed to notch it up abit. It did for me... wish I could still do it.

What I can't stand are those "helpful" magazine articles about what type of clothes flatters your figure. It seems there's different styles
suited for wider hips, heavy thights and thick calves (the calves are all muscle, though). So what if you have all 3 ?!?

Yeah, I agree with you Nora! They are all worthless and half the time, you have to pay just to 'read' the stupid things.
I pray about my fitness goals and so far so good My knees have been sore a little but I've been doing a lot of stretching too, especially trying to get my splits back like I had them in dance class at the age of 17. I'm now 36, so that's been many many years ago. I must 'believe' to 'receive' and I will accomplish it sooner or later! |
