I'm not real sure how I missed these in the early 80's as my Ex & I hung out with a electronics geek (well they weren't called that back then) through the 80's & 90's. I found a CED Video Disk on eBay of "Elephant Parts" and just for kicks I purchased it just to see what it was like. I received it today. When I opened the package I was surprised to find a plastic case that resembles an extremely large floppy disk! I haven't gotten brave enough to take the disk out of the case or "caddy" yet. From the way I understand, these were made much like the old record pressings with grooves and the players had stylus cartridges. It sounds pretty interesting. I was just wondering if anyone here had one, if they still have it and what they thought of it. There is an interesting website: cedmagic.com which has a lot of interesting information. THe quality was very good for the day but to problem was if they got the tiniest scratch or if there was dust the stylus would hit the movie would skip. The LaserDisc was a better but a significantly more expensive machine. Same size and the CED discs but you could not argue the quality of the picture. I saw Elephant Parts on the first Generation of Laserdisc when I was in Germany in 1981. The Base Exchange was doing a Demo and they chose nez to Demo. I had to chuckle when Nez coined the term "Video Record" when in deed it really was in the terminology of the day. It was watching that same demo when NNS became my favorite sketch. Now we are are Compact DVD and Now are at Blue Ray technology almost 30 years from the first generation of Video discs. I've been in denial over the Blue Ray, I guess I didn't want to face having to replace everything.... I still haven't gotten brave enough to take the disc out of the caddy. I thought it would be cool to frame it to display it. One of the things it said on the website was that the CED disks only had a life expectancy of 900 plays and they weren't sure of the actual 'shelf life'. Something else I found out (I'm ususally always the last to know & y'all probably knew this) CD's were around and available as early as 1971. I read that in an interview that Nez had done. I tried to find it again, but I couldn't. I thought that was interesting. Smashing, Simply Smashing!

I remember we bought our first cd player mid 1986 - Whitney Houston was my first cd - my second - The Monkees, Then & Now. Smashing, Simply Smashing!

I hadn't bought any till the 2000's, lol. Just didn't, I had already replaced vinyl with cassette. That might be why I took my time. Now I've got about 30 cd's...My sons of course had them though since the 90's. Rachael

Remember when VCRs came out in 1976 how expensive they were and only the rich people got them because they were about $500 or $600 for the machine? Then by 1996,twenty years later,the price on VCRs was down to less than $100. Maybe that's the same with CDs.

He used to read all these electronics magazines, and I remember him telling me about CDs and how they were the wave of the future and would soon replace records completely. I scoffed at the time, but how right he turned out to be! He was the first person I knew who went out and bought a CD player (even though they were still really expensive) and some CDs -- mostly classical, I think, and he was pretty generous with letting the rest of us listen to his system, though I think we were afraid to touch it. I wonder what type of music media he has now.... Come to think of it, I also remember watching Television Parts on his TV, which was also a pretty nice set as I recall! The sound quality compared to vinyl was the first thing said. But I have found that there is still skipping with cd's, like an album did....anyway, the djs would say here is a cut from the cd box set of...whoever, and go pick it up in the stores, lol. Rachael
