"Maggie, I'd like you to meet Alan Miller. He's a new transfer student," Professor Ross introduced him. Maggie looked up to the brightest, most intense pair of blue eyes she'd ever seen. Alan's straight ash-blonde hair fell to the collar of his blue button down oxford.
Maggie stuck out her hand, "Pleased to meet you."
"The pleasure is all mine," Alan smiled charmingly. His voice was deep, yet soft.
"Maggie, Alan is going to be joining us on the paper as a staff writer," explained Prof. Ross. "Would you mind showing him the ropes? I have a faculty meeting to get to or I'd do it myself."
"Sure," she shrugged and for the next half hour Maggie showed Alan around the newspaper office, explaining the procedures as she went. Maggie was friendly to him as she would be to any new student, but not particularly struck by him. Although Alan was classically handsome, Maggie only had eyes for one boy.
Alan, however, was used to a little more female attention than Maggie was giving him and decided to try and flirt a little. She wasn't his type, he admitted to himself. Usually he went for more sophisticated girls with their dresses, high heels and beehive hairdo's. Maggie, with her unruly curls, overalls and leather sandals, had none of these traits.
"Do you have any questions?" asked Maggie politely after the tour.
"Yeah, would you like to go have a cup of coffee with me?"
Maggie blushed, feeling uncomfortable. With the exception of Micky, she hadn't been on the receiving end of male attention much.
"Um, thank you but my boyfriend is expecting me after my last class," she said, slightly emphasizing a certain word.
"Oh, I'm sorry," Alan apologized. "How presumptuous of me. I should have realized a pretty girl like you would have a boyfriend." Nice recovery, he thought smugly to himself.
"That's alright. Well, I guess I'll see you later," Maggie waved as she picked up her books to leave.
"So how was school?" aked Micky after he greeted her with a hug and kiss.
"Oh, you know, the usual," answered Maggie carelessly as she tied her tennis shoes. She and Micky were planning to take a walk on th ebeach. "A pop quiz, covered students protesting not enough vegetarian meals in the dining hall and...getting asked on a date."
She watched Micky closely to see what his reaction would be to his bit of news. His normally almond-shaped eyes suddenly became wide. "Well, um, what did you say?"
"I turned him down of course, silly," she laughed. "In case you've forgotten I already have a boyfriend."
"Yeah well, I try not to think about it too much but I suppose I could be replaced," Micky said glumly.
"Don't talk that way," reprimanded Maggie softly as she reached for his hand. Every so often Micky seemed to be plagued by self doubt. "Trust me, no one will ever replace you."
Micky stopped mid-stride, causing Maggie to come to a halt since they were still holding hands. He bent down to kiss her right then and there, on the beach in front of everyone to see. He knew she wasn't very keen on the idea of too much public affection, so he kept it short. Maggie gave him a small smile of thanks.
It had been a while since the pair had gone on a real date so they agreed to go to the movies on Friday night.
"We don't have a gig so they've got me working late at the shop that day. Can we meet around seven at the little diner across from the theater to catch some dinner before the show?"
Maggie thought for a minute, mentally reviewing her schedule., "Yes, that should be fine. It will be fun to have a night on the town."
"Okay then, I'll wash up and change at the "Y" by the garage so I won't show up for our date with grease on my face," smiled Micky. He was really looking forward to the date, too.
More coming! And I promise to get Micky out of the hospital in my other story soon
