I remember years ago reading about how Micky auditioned for the role of The Fonz on "Happy Days". I love Henry Winkler in that role,but I often wonder how Micky would of interpreted that character?

I think it would have been similar...but of course Winker's take on it was perfection. But didn't Micky do some kind of biker-type character on an episode of Cannon or Adam-12 or something? He would have been like that I think.

Right you are. Micky was in an episode of "Adam-12" called "Dirt Duel" which aired 9-13-1972 and he played a character named Oiler.
But "Happy Days" came out in 1974,only 6 years after The Monkees Tv show ended. Would it of been too soon for him to of been The Fonz? I think that if Micky did get that role that he would of had a different take on it. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I think of the times he pulled his punk-style stunt (I mean Baby Face Morales, not his Cagney impersonation, heh!) and I think he could've developed something pretty good, really! Hard to say exactly what, would be a cool question for an interviewer to ask him, although perhaps a tough one for him to answer. |

And with Henry Winkler having made The Fonz his own,it's pretty hard picturing anybody else in that role.

Yes this is true, but I think Micky would have been a cool Fonz with his own unique gifts as well.

And it would of been a unique challenge for Micky. He's great at the style of comedy "Happy Days" was,but The Fonz was really serious in the first two seasons of that show,then became more lighthearted. It would of been interesting to see Micky do that.

I kind of have to clear something up for those people who do not know,but there are a few,that Micky Dolenz did indeed audition for the role of The Fonz in 1973,but he lost to Henry Winkler.

As much as I love our Mickster, Henry was the right choice for the Fonz. We all know how amazing he is as the Fonz. I am also just a firm believer that the right roles go to the right people.
Not to get too lengthy, there are lots of actors/roles I could list, but a great example that I heard recently was Tom Hanks and his Forrest Gump role. I heard that John Travolta turned the role down. Now, I happen think that Tom Hanks IS Forrest Gump and nobody else could've done the same justice to it that he did, and Travolta's refusal was just meant to be. That's just my personal take on the subject, Jilly |

*laughs*at the thought of travolta saying "life is like a box of chocolate. I don't think the movie would have been as good with Travolta in it.(other then the fact I personally don't think he is a good actor).
I agree Jilly, though Micky could have made it his own. (alot of what fonzie became is only because Henry put his 2 cents in). Jack: *very upset look on his face* Stop! No, not good! What are you doing? Not Good! You're burning all the food, the shade... the RUM!
Elizabeth: *rolls eyes* Yes, the rum is gone. Jack: *anguished look* Why is the rum gone?! Elizabeth: *getting annoyed* One, because rum is a vile drink that turns even the most respectable men into complete scoundrels. Two, that signal is over a thousand feet high. The entire royal navy is out looking for me; do you really think that there is EVEN the slightest chance that they won't see it?! Jack: *pause* *anguished look once more* But why is the rum gone?! |

They also wanted Travolta to play the part of Jim Morrison in around 1979 or 1980,when the Doors were sparking interest again. I could never of seen him play that part. Kilmer did a great job.

I think Michael Hutchence of INXS would have made a great Jim Morrison too. His own sister even sent a letter to Oliver Stone when the movie was being cast to ask if her brother could at least have an audition...cuz he woulda been perfect! I liked Kilmer's performance fine...but I always wonder "what if?"
I think in reference to Micky being the Fonz, well, as much as I LOVE Micky, the casting directors made the right choice. And I believe that if Micky was meant to play the Fonz then he would have. I think Henry Winkler fit the body tope of the Fonz better anyway. The FonZ was a tough character that used to beat guys up and stuff, Micky's not as big as Henry and is more of a lover than a fighter, I think. But again, I don't know if this was the original outline of the character, or if Henry added that on his own. In any case, Micky himself even agrees that the right choice was made. Sapphirefrodis |

I think Henry's interpretation of The Fonz was from the character he played in the movie "The Lords of Flatbush". At least somewhat.
I wonder if there is any pictures or footage existing of Micky's screentest for the Fonz? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I wondered about this myself, it is a fascinating "what if". I do think that Henry Winkler was so right for that role, but one does wonder how well Micky could have done it, had he landed the role. Just hard to say.

I did some research on any existing footage or pictures from Micky's screentest for that role,but came up with nothing. Oh well,it was worth a try.

Hmm...didn't Micky also almost get considered for the role of the Joker on a Batman movie? And then Jim Carrey got it in the end, cuz the director changed. Imagine Micky as the Joker, he woulda been a good one, imho, but Carrey did the part really good, too, eh?

I think the role of The Joker in the Batman movie went to Jack Nicholson and The Riddler went to Jim Carrey. Micky would of been great in either role. Both villains have to think fast with their responses and are very quick-witted,which is right up Micky's alley.

Micky as a villain in one of the Batman films would of been neat to see. I could of seen Micky alongside Arnold.

Well personally I'm kind of glad Micky didn't get the part. I love Micky don't get me wrong; however, the character Fonzie was could have tarnished Micky's career too (If people perceived him the wrong way as some have perceived the Fonzie character as being a not so nice person).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In Micky's book he talked about how Henry made a comment to him about seeing Micky there to audition for the part. |
I don't think Micky would have made a good Joker in Batman. Jack Nicholson sort of nailed that.
However, I think if they wanted a villain for a future Superman movie, He would be great as the Toyman. Superman has so many cool villians too. I'm kind of tired of them using Lex Luthor all the time. BD the GOMOTB(Grumpy Old Man of the Board.....Yeah thats me! whatcha gonna do about it?)
It would be great if Micky did his over-the-top hyperactive comedy routine when portraying a villain. Now that would be something to see!
On this page is a "what if" picture. Micky's head it too big for this one of What-if Happy Days, but heck, someone at least tried.
