Davy Jones, front man for the popular 1960s group The Monkees and once a heartthrob to millions of teen girls, will make an appearance Sunday in Fort Lauderdale.
Jones, now 62, will attend the showing of The Monkees' only theatrical release, Head, being screened at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival's First Annual '60s Beach Movie Fest.
Head, written and produced by Bob Rafelson and actor Jack Nicholson before he was famous, is described as a ``psychedelic movie.''
Starring Jones, along with fellow Monkees Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith -- and with guest appearances by Frank Zappa, Nicholson and Dennis Hopper -- it still proved a huge flop when released in 1968.
However, today the movie has a cult following and is considered a satirical look at The Monkees' real-life experience as a band created solely by Hollywood, namely to star in a television sitcom that became a huge hit. Its catchy theme song announced the group: ``Hey, hey! We're The Monkees!''
The British Jones' boyish looks made him the break-out Monkee and a favorite on the covers of Tiger Beat and 16 magazines.
He also sang some of the group's biggest hits: Daydream Believer and I Wanna Be Free.
Admission to the movie is $5. Head will be shown at Cinema Paradiso at 503 SE Sixth St. There will be a 6:30 p.m. reception followed by the movie's screening at 7:30.
