Featuring interviews with Peter Trok, Henry Jaglom, Karen Black and Jim Frawley. And if you go to BBC Radio 2 : http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/ it's possible that you might be able to find out how to listen to it, or if they will podcast it. Sometimes they do. That's usually where you can go to hear a program once it has been broadcast. Here's what their press office says about the show: Movie Outcasts - The Making Of Easy Rider Tuesday 29 July 11.30am-12.00noon BBC RADIO 4 This programme explores how two TV producers stopped "Monkee-ing" around and kick-started an artistic renaissance on the big screen. Presented by Micky Dolenz, Movie Outcasts travels back to late Sixties America, where young, hip TV producers Bert Schneider and Bob Rafelson were riding high on the success of their brainchild, The Monkees, the made-for-TV band in which Dolenz was lead vocalist and drummer. Propelled into the fast lane by the international success of the series and the band itself, Schneider and Rafelson turned their sights to the big screen and agreed to finance a low-budget movie, then entitled The Loners, brought to them by Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda. Neither Fonda nor Hopper had made a movie before and filming began in New Orleans with a ragbag of a crew, no scripts and no running order. This programme explores what happened as Schneider and Rafelson hit the road with Fonda and Hopper - and The Loners evolved into Easy Rider. Dolenz hears about the strains that surfaced and learns how Hopper and Fonda came to cut the film in different editing suites. Easy Rider cost half a million dollars to make and took $19 million dollars in its first week. It struck a chord with the youth of America - and with the big studios, who recognised that low-budget and artistic could translate into box-office bucks. Posts: 761 (07/25/08 7:20 PM) GOMOTB Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I find it absolutely delightful and very funny at times that Peter Fonda is asked to cameo as a biker in current TV shows and films. Fonda showed up as the grizzled biker toward the end of Wild Hogs(Long title: "Boomers go on a mid life crisis ride across America") and correcting his biker gang leader son (Ray Liotta) explaining what riding a motorcycle is really about. Sort of carrying on the ideal his character had in Easy Rider. Amazing how that "character's" ideals carried forward into this film with. The whole thing about Easy Rider's Captain America (Fonda) and Billy (Hopper) was not so much about about the dope, music, hippies, chicks and cool choppers whereas it was a picture of the times. I think the message was Fonda's character longed to go out and find an ideal America but became disillusioned with what the real America had become and how Real America killed those ideals in the end (with all 3 main characters getting killed). In that respect Captain America was sort of a Lone Ranger and became a hero figure with great ideals that we could all grab onto (and at the time many of us of the day, being disillusioned with Vietnam and politics etc, were wondering where did America go) whereas Billy was just along for the party(as also so many of our day were also). Bob & Bert must have been making ER about the time they were also making HEAD because Dennis Hopper showed up in the Studio Commissary in HEAD, in costume with Jack ,but at the time not many made the connection till years later when we all saw the movie come out on Video. If you havent seen Wild Hogs, I highly recommend it. Some coars language but its absolutely hilarious. As for "Easy Rider", I remember the movie well - although it was years later before I knew of the connection to The Monkees. And even later - like about 4 years ago - when I heard Peter sing the song he wrote for the movie that they didn't use - called, of course "Easy Rider". It's called being artistic. Just tell people you were having "an artistic moment". I'm kidding. Actually, I don't know what people who think that way are called in general society. I can just tell you that it's gotten me a lot of work.

But at first there are a couple of little commercials, until it begins. Starts off with Born To Be Wild then and we're off! Rafelson says they were like rock and roll outlaws packaged for television. with the Monkees series. Karen Black says she was embarrassed to put Easy Rider on her resume until it grossed into the millions. It was totally insane she says, filming it. Head and Easy Rider were both being planned and worked on at the same time. (I did not know that.) When Head bombed, the focus shifted more and more on Easy Rider, it says. And the music - Hendrix "Now if six turned out to be nine, I don't mind". And they say they picked the music because about 200 lps were being played during the making of, and if a song seemed to fit what what being filmed, they put that song into the soundtrack. All I know is that by the time I was a senior in '72, that soundtrack was everywhere, and everyone was talking about the movie. Have you seen it, have you heard it? This is an excellent story about it, and very true about what was going on in the times. Rachael
