I Do, Don't I?
Micky sat at the kitchen table, trying to fit a huge sandwich in his mouth. "Hmmm..." He thought out loud. "I wish I could invent something that could make a big sandwich small enough to fit in your mouth."
"Wouldn't that be a shrink-ray?" Peter asked
"Well, just your basic shrink-ray wouldn't quite work right." Micky answered, "'Cause if it just shrunk the sandwich, it wouldn't fill you up. I'd have to make one that would shrink the size of the sandwich, but then expand it again in my stomach."
"Sounds weird," Mike called from the bandstand. "Don't ask me to test it. Anyway, we should be spending our time practicing for the gig on Friday, not inventing shrink-rays."
"Alright," Micky said, finishing off his sandwich and getting up from the table. "Where's Davy?"
"I think he's on a date," Peter said, "He should be back soon, though, I hope."
As if on cue, the door opened, and in walked Davy, leading a girl by the hand.
"Uh-oh," Micky whispered to Mike, "He's got that stars-in-his-eyes look again. This might be a problem."
"Right," Mike whispered back, then said to Davy. "Say goodbye and let's practice."
Davy didn't look like he intended to say goodbye just then, and instead looked at the girl before answering Mike. "Uh, can I talk to you guys for a minute?"
"Okay, but make it quick." Mike said.
They gathered on the various couches and chairs in the living room, Davy and the girl remained standing.
Micky broke the silence by asking, "Who's the chick?"
Davy looked at the girl, then at Micky before answering, "Micky, Mike, Peter, I'd like you to meet Elizabeth. My fiance."
Mike started choking on nothing, Micky gasped, and Peter asked, unbelieving, "Your fiance? But we've never even met her before!"
Davy sighed, "I figured this was how you'd react. Truth be told, Elizabeth and I have known each other for five months. I don't know why I never introduced you, I guess it just never came up."
"Just never came up?" Mike coughed. "You were planning on marrying this girl and it just never came up?"
"Davy and I met at a coffee shop downtown. We both ordered tea, and were mentioning how much we hated coffee, and just started talking," Elizabeth explained.
"Lizzy's originally from England as well," Davy stated, "Her family moved over here a year ago, and she's going to school at the college here in Malibu."
"What are you going into?" Peter asked.
"I'm trying to become a teacher," Lizzy said. "I've always loved kids, and want to influence the younger generation."
"Wait," Mike interrupted, "back to the topic at hand." He turned to Davy, "Are you sure you're going to go through with this? You're sure you're committed?" Davy looked wounded, and Mike regretting saying that in front of Elizabeth. He tried to patch it up. "I mean, you're only twenty! You still have your whole life ahead of you."
"And, I want to spend every minute of it with Lizzy," Davy stated firmly. "Now if you don't mind, we'd better get this place cleaned up, because her family's coming over this afternoon. Since I only have my grandfather, and he's all the way in England, you're the most family they have to meet."
"Your family?" Micky asked Lizzy.
"Yes," she explained, "My mother, father, and younger brother, Edmond. He's sixteen. They're expected in under an hour."
"Well, then," Peter said, "Let's get cleaning!"
Mike pulled Micky aside into the bathroom as they grabbed the cleaning supplies. "How long do you think this will last?" he asked.
"I dunno, man," Micky sighed, "He's never brought the girl's family over before. He sure seems serious!"
