Posts: 2229 (06/07/05 9:22 PM) Time Girl Fanfic, She Wrote Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Okie Dokie, because I'm going away for the 4th of July holiday, I thought I'd give my 4th story early What I was thinking for the story is that Peter invites the guys to come to CT with him for the 4th of July Though Peter's Mom is a easy-going person, his Dad wishes that his son would had been a teacher and not a musican Also, Peter encounters his bullies and a girl he had a crush on Monkees in CT Despite being a hot summer day, in fact it was actually one of the hottest days in the history of CA, the Monkees were trying to go about their day. Davy was trying to be as patient for Peter, who was calling home to get off the phone, so he can call a girl he's been seeing name Debbie, Mike was reading the paper and sighing, after finding out the weather is just gonna get hotter and hotter, and Micky was trying to fix up the plug-in fan, since the guys had no air conditionor. "Ok, I think I got it working now," said Micky. "Turn it on then," said Davy. Micky did just that, and the fan worked. Perhaps, it worked too well, for the fan was set on a high speed and items began to fly all over the pad. "It's moving too fast, shut it off!" yelled Mike, over the loud noise of the fan. Instead of turning the fan off, Micky unplugged it. "That was kind of crazy," he said. Since Peter, who was still on the phone, Mike and Davy looked at his bandmate as if he were nuts. Micky just gave them a sheepish smile. A few moments later,Peter got off the phone. "Hey guess what?" he said. "What up?" asked the other Monkees pretending to be excited. "The weather's been great in CT, and their getting ready for the 4th of July festivites." "That's great Peter," said Davy. "Here's the best part, Mom just invited us to perform at a few of the events. "Wow, Groovy man," said Micky. "Thanks Peter," said Mike. "Thank you, but you should really thank my Mom," said Peter. The guys checked their piggy bank, or in their case Monkey bank to check and see if they had enough money for their trip, and sure enough they did. "It's a good thing we saved some cash from or last gigs," said Mike. "I can't wait to see my folks, brothers and sister again," said Peter. As a matter in fact, Peter's brother Nick atually came to visit the guys during vaction from school. It was a long drive to Connecticut, but the guys took turns driving and two days later, they were in Texas. They decided to call on Mike's Aunt Kate to see if they could rest there for a few days. Mike called from a payphone in a rest area to see if they could come. "What did she say, Mike?" Peter asked as Mike walked toward them. "She said she'd be glad to put us up for a spell." Mike replied. "That's great." Davy said, "Your Aunt was always nice." So Mike drove the car over to his Aunt's ranch. They were surprised at what they found. The old house had been replaced by a mansion! Ever since oil was discovered on her ranch, Mike's Aunt was rich. Mike remembered when he and the other Monkees had to battle Black Bart to get him to leave his Aunt alone. Driving slowly, Mike pulled the Monkeemobile up to the front of the house. A second later, Mike's Aunt came running out. "Mike! I'm so glad to see you!" She exclaimed, giving him a big hug. "Glad to see you too, Auntie." Mike replied. "Still hanging out with these fellers,eh?" Kate teased. "Yeah, they're good guys." Mike said. "Well, c'mon in. Rest yourselves, I heard you're going on for some ways yet." "We're going to my family's house in Connecticut." Peter said. "We're going to play for a few of their town's July 4th's festivities." "Connecticut?" Kate repeated, leading them into the house. "Well, you boys have a ways to go." Suddenly, she whistled and a butler came over. "Yes, madam?" "Get my nephew's and his friends' luggage and put it in their room." Kate said. "At once, madam." "Boy, you sure have come a long way, Aunt Kate." Mike said. "All because of you four." She replied, "You got rid of that Black Bart, when he tried to force me off this ranch so he could have the oil." They went upstairs and Kate showed them where they would be staying. It was a large room with plush carpeting and four beds. "I'll let you boys freshen up a bit before supper." She said, then left the room. "Wow, what a place." Micky said, looking out the window. "Do we have to go to connecticut?" Davy asked. "Yes, I promised Mom we would be there." Peter said. "So let's enjoy this, because tomorrow we'll have to keep going." Mike added. Though the guys were unhappy about that, they knew Mike was right. After washing up, Micky, Peter and Davy took a nap, while Mike looked over the map to see where to go next. To be continued... The guys enjoyed spending the evening at Aunt Kate's, but the next day, they had to set off to Ct. "You boys have a safe trip," said Kate. "Sure will Ms. Kate, and thank you for letting us stay overnight," said Micky. "Thanks for the groovy meal," said Davy. "We'll call you when we get there," said Mike, giving his aunt a quick hug. "Next stop, Ct," said Peter. And the guys took off. It took the guys two days, but they finally made it to Ct. "Welcome to Ct," said Peter, reading the state sign. "How long do we have till we get to your house Peter," asked Davy. "Not to long, just another hour or so." "That's what you said about an hour ago at the gas station," said Micky. "Come on fellas, we're almost there, said Mike, who then muddered under his breath, I hope." And Peter was right. About an hour later, the arrived at Peter's family's house. "Here we are," said Peter. The guys got out of the car, and Peter rang the doorbell. When the door open, a middle aged woman stood at the door. It was his Mom. "Peter, you made it," she said, giving her son a big hug. "It's great to see you to Mom, how have you been?" Peter asked. "I'm doing just fine." Peter's Mom then saw the guys. "You must be the bandmates Peter told me about from his letters." The guys were about to introduce themselves, but Peter's Mom stopped them. "Let me guess which one you are." She indicated Mike. "Tall Texan, wears a woolhat, even in the summer, you must be Mike." "Yes ma'am," said Mike. "Please call me Virginia, or Ginny," said Peter's Mom. She then looked at Micky. "Hmm, curly haired, great sence of humor, you gotta be Micky." "Yes," said Micky, who then then turned to Peter and whispered,"How does she do that?" "It's kind of a special talent she has," said Peter. Virginia then turned to Davy. "That must leave, not that tall, but a big heart, Davy right?" she asked. "That's me," said Davy. "Well, now that we all had introduce ourselves, why don't you guys come in," said Virginia. The guys were quite surprsied that Peter's Mom was so sweet. "Here it is. It's not much, but we're happy here," said Virginia, as she lead the guys into the house. "You got a groovy house," said Micky. "Yeah, all the comforts of home," said Peter. "This is your home shotgun," said Mike with a laugh. "I agree, it's a nice house," said Davy. "Why thank you, said Virginia, Why don't you boys make yourself at home in the living room, and I'll get you some lemonade. You must be tired after your long trip." The guys settled into the living room, and a few seconds later, Virgina came in with a tray of lemonade. The guys thanked her and accepted the glasses. The lemonade tased great, not too sweet, and not too sour. "So, where's everybody?" Peter asked. "Your Father's teaching a summer course at the college, your brother Nick is with his friends by the mill, helping getting the floats ready for the 4th parade, your other brother Chris is at the brook, trying to get his boat to sail for the toy boat race, and your sister ann, is playing at a friends' hosuse," Virginia answered. "Dad teaches in the summer now too?" Peter asked. "Yes, he really loves to teach," Virginia replied, "And with your siblings going to college in a few years, he decided to take on a few summer courses." Peter just stared at his glass and didn't reply. The other Monkees noticed this, but didn't say anything. Mike broke the silence. "Well, I'll go get the luggage from the car." "We'll help." Micky replied as the others went outside to grab the luggage and equipment. Virginia looked at all the stuff they brought. "My, how did you fit all that in the car?" She asked. "Careful planning." Micky replied with a smile. "There's some space on the back porch-don't worry, it has a screen around it-where you boys can set up and rehearse if you'd like." Peter's mom replied. "Thanks, Mrs...I mean, Virginia." Mike said. So the Monkees left their equipment on the back porch, then went up to their room to rest. Peter was still kinda quiet after his Mom's remark about his dad. "What's the matter, Peter?" Davy asked, sitting next to him on the bed. "Oh, nothing." Peter said quietly. "You got real quiet after you found out about your Dad." Mike added. Peter looked at his friends, and decided to tell them about his relationship with his Dad. "My Dad is very smart." He said quietly, "He was in the top of his class in school. It wasn't long before he got a degree in science and began to teach at the local college." Peter got up and began to walk around the room. "From the beginning, my Dad always impressed upon me and my brothers and sister the value of education. I did my best in school to please him. While in high school, my Dad began to tell me how proud he would be if I became a teacher like himself." "He wanted you to teach school too?" Micky asked. Peter nodded, "Yeah, but I had no desire to do that. Music is my life. But my Dad always saw music as a hobby, and wanted me to go to college and become a teacher like himself." Peter's face grew sad as he remembered what happened. "When I told him I wanted to be a musician, a rock musician, my Dad hit the roof. If I wanted to do classical music, that might've been acceptable to him, but not rock and roll. I couldn't take it, so I gathered up my savings, backed my bags and my guitar, and headed out to California, where eventually I met you three." The other three Monkees were stunned by all this. They had known Peter's Dad wasn't too happy about his life, but didn't know he had wanted Peter to follow in his footsteps. "We're sorry, Peter. We didn't know." Mike said. "Yeah, we made up, kind of." Peter replied, "I just hope we can mend fences once again." "Don't worry, Peter, we'll be with you." Davy said, patting him on the back. To Be Continued..... "It's a good thing we have that spare cot your father got in the war," said Virginia, showing the guys the guestroom, that already had two twin beds where they were staying, while Peter would stay in his old room. "Which reminds me, he should be home soon." Peter wasn't really looking forward to hearing his father making a comment about his choose of carrer, or how long his hair was growing. He then came up with a plan. "Say, do you guys mind if I show you around town?"Peter asked his bandmates. Although the guys were tired from their long car trip, they answered yes. "Mom, I'm showing the guys are town, maybe we're go the mill and meet Chris," said Peter. "Ok, by the way, tell Chris it's his turn to do the dishes," said Virginia with a laugh. And the guys headed off. Since it was such a nice day, and being cooped up in a car, the guys decided to walk around the town. "Here we are, the old mill. The guys then noticed a young man pushing a float. Peter reginized the person right away. "Chris!" he called to the person. It was indeed Peter's brother. Chris went up to meet his brother. "Hey Peter, Mike, Micky Davy, what are you guys doing here?" asked Chris. The guys got to meet Chris, when he came to Ca a few months ago for spring break. "We're playing at a concert for the 4th," said Davy. "Hey that's a pretty groovy looking float there," said Micky. "Thanks, it took me several days to make it, but I think it looks great," said Chris. "To me it looks likes a bunch of painted tissues glued together," said a voice from behind them. Everyone turned around,a nd saw a group of guys around the same age as the Monkees, but were muscular built and had crew cut hair stlyes. "Well well well, if it isn't Petey Dork and his brother Dork Jr.," said the same person. "Oh hi there Bill, Tom and Jim," said Peter. "You know these guys?" Mike asked Peter. "I just went to school with these guys," said Peter. "I see you bought your city slick friends with you," said Bill. "But I'm not from the city, I'm english," said Davy. "Oh, a red coat," said Jim. "Hey, that's not nice," said Peter. "Oh, what are you gonna do, tell your Daddy?" asked Ted with a laugh. "Come on you guys, let's blow these kiddes and hang out in town with the "grown-up," said Bill. And the three bullies took off with a laugh. "I'm guess that they were the bullies at your shool Peter," said Davy. "They weren't class messangers," said Micky. "Those guys think they're so cool, just because they win every contest and float prize every 4th," said Chris. "What do you mean?" asked Davy. "Besides a parade, there's a best float prize, a pie eating contest, egg toss, and a cow milking competion." "We'll they won't be the winners this years," said Mike. "What do you mean?" asked Peter. "I'm saying we should enter the contest." "Have you guys ever enetered those type of contest before?" asked Chris. "You know, I placed in a pie eating contest at a fair in England," said Davy. "What place?" Peter asked. "Last, but I can try it again." "I won a prize at school for and egg tossing game," said Micky. "Which prize?" Mike asked. "Last, I dropped the egg before the game,but it's worth an another try." "And I used to mile cows on Aunt Kate's ranch," said Mike. "Chris, where do you sign up to particapate in the contest?" asked Peter. "Right at the mill," Chris answered. So after Micky, Mike and Davy signed up for the various competitions, Chris looked proudly at his brother's friends. "You guys are groovy. You'll show those bullies." Peter smiled and draped an arm around his brother's shoulders. "It's about time they were knocked down a peg or two." He said, then turned serious. "By the way, Mom said it's your turn to do the dishes." "Aw, I was hoping she'd forget." Chris said, shaking his head. "I guess I better get home then." Chris picked up his float and started back home. Peter and the other Monkees stayed where they were. Chris looked back at his brother. "You guys coming? Dad should be home from teaching." Peter shrugged and then he and the others followed Chris back home. Before they arrived back at the house. Peter took Chris by the arm. "What's the matter, Peter?" Chris asked. "Tell me. Is Dad still...upset with me?" Peter asked. "It's hard to say, Peter." Chris said, "He doesn't talk about you much, but he is interested in what you tell Mom in your letters home." Peter simply nodded and the group continued their journey. A few minutes later, Chris, Peter and the others walked up the sidewalk of the Tork home. Just as they were going up the porch steps, the front door swung open. Standing inside the door was a stern-looking middle-aged man wearing glasses and a mustache. He looked like an older version of Peter. The group came to a halt half-way up the steps. "Hi, Dad." Peter said quietly. To Be Continued.... Lisa, the other Glick Chick! Here goes: John Tork looked over Peter's shoulder at the other four on the steps, then back up at Peter. He grunted, then asked, "Who're they?" Peter looked over his shoulder, and motioned for the others to come up on the porch with him. "Oh," he said, "These are my friends and roommates from California," he decided it wouldn't be best to bring up the subject of his rock group, "Micky, Davy, and Mike. Guys, this is my dad." Each Monkee solemnly shook John's hand, then he looked back at Peter. "How long you gonna be staying?" "We're not sure, a couple days, maybe a week. At least through July fourth." Just then Virginia called everyone to dinner from inside the house. The smell of fried chicken reached the three Monkees' nostrils, and they ran inside, followed by Nick. After living off of gas station food for a few days, they welcomed some good home-cooking. As Peter walked through the doorway, his dad called him back outside. A little reluctantly the blond turned back to his father. John looked Peter up and down, then a slight smile crossed his face. "It's good to have you home," he said. "It's good to be home," Peter replied, "but we'd better get inside before all the chicken is gone. Micky looks skinny, but he can sure put a lot away!" During dinner, the guys told John, Virginia as well as Nick, Chris and Anne, who were glad to see their big brother Peter home about the adventures they've had in Ca. "Did you really get to meet a King and Queen?" asked Anne, refering to the times the Monkees met Prince Ludlow and Queen Wendy. "Yep, and we were made memebers of the royal court to," said Peter. "Wow." "And you guys got to sail on a pirate ship?" asked Chris, who loves boats. "Not real pirates, but it felt like it," said Mike. "Cool." "That's not all, they just signed up to particapate in the Fourth of July contest," said Nick. "Really, which ones?" asked Virginia. "I'd signed up for the egg toss," said Micky. "I'm doing the pie eating contest," said Davy. "I'm in the cow milking competion," said Mike. "Plus you got that show to perform at to," said Nick. "Don't worry, we'll have time to parctice for both," said Mike. "I'm sure you boys will win, but be aware of those boys," said John. "You mean Jim, Bob, and Ted?"asked Peter. "Nick told us they win ever year," said Davy. "They might had won by cheating, just like they did when I taught them," said John. The next day, the guys were at the mill, parcticing for the contests. Virginia baked a pie for Davy, he ate while Nick timed him, Mike was milking on of the cows in the barn, with the help of a timer, while Peter helped Micky practice the egg toss. When Micky missed one of the eggs, the guys heard a voice. "Nice try, but yo're suppose to catch the egg," said the voice. Everyone turned to see a young woman standing there. She had blonde-brown hair and was dressed in a pair of jeans and a pesant top. Peter reginzed the person right away. "Maryann," he said walking up to the woman. "It's great to see you again Peter," said Maryann, giving Peter a hug. "Maryann, I want you to meet my friends from Ca, Mike, Davy and Micky. Maryann politly shook hands with the guys, but had to laugh, after seeing Davy had some blueberry jam on the side of hios face from when he was paraticing pie eating. "Ah, isn't that sweet," said a voice. "Yeah, little Petey's got a girlfriend," said another voice. "Hey, Petey, if Maryann likes you so much, how come she didn't go to the dance with you in High School," said yet another voice. Everyone knew it was Bob, Ted and Jim standing behind them. "I did go to the dance with any of you clowns either," said Maryann, who hated Bob,Ted and Jim as much as Peter did. "What are you guys doing here anyway?" asked Mike. "We were paraciting,a nd wanting to check out the pathic competion," said Bob. "Well, I was on my way to go ride my hose at the ranch and was wondering if," said Maryann, who got inturupeted by Ted who said, "We'd love to come with you." "I was actually going to invite Peter, Nick and his friends," said Maryann. But Jim, Ted and Bob went with Maryann and the Monkees and Nick to the ranch. At the ranch, the guys watched and were impressed by Maryann's riding. "That was great," said Mike. "You really are a wonderful rider," said Micky. "Maryann's won many awards for riding," said Peter. "I never met anyone who can ride like that," said Davy. "Thank you, said Maryann with a blush, You Peter and I used to ride together all the time." "I wasn't as good as you Maryann," said Peter. "No, I'd like to see the way you ride Petey," said Jim. "Yeah you and your city slicker friends," said Ted. "This should be a sight," said Bob. "I don't know," said Peter. At that moment, Bob, Ted and Jim began to cluck like chickens. "Come on fellas, let's show them," said Mike. "I'll do it, but you know, you really shouldn't ride on a full stomach," said Davy. "Are you sure we should?' asked Peter. "Don't worry Peter, this riding stuff looks pretty easy," said Micky. So the guys got on some hosres and began to ride. Unfountuntly, the guys had a lot trouble with riding. "Whoa boy whoa," said Micky. "Stop please," said Mike. "Simone says stop," said Davy. "Just hang on guys," said Peter, who had the most control of his hosre. "Please becareful," called Maryann. Meanwhile, Ted Jim and Bob were laughing at the sight. Suddenly, all four horses stopped. Luckily for the guys, the horses stopped in safe spots. Mike fell in a haystack, Davy laned in a horses drinking stall, and Micky landed in mud. Only Peter stayed on his horse, by holding on to the riens, after remmebering what he learned from Maryann. Maryann gasped after witnessing what happened and hoped the guys weren't hurt, meanwhile, Bob Jim and Ted were laughing their heads off. "Are you guys ok?" Peter asked. "I'm fine, good thing that this haystack was there," said Mike, picking hay out of hair. "What about you Davy?" "A little wet, but noting broken," Davy answered. "You alright there Micky?" Peter asked. "Yeah, luckily the mud broke my fall," Micky answered. "Hey city slicker, that may look like mud," said Jim. "Yeah, but some of it don't smell like it," said Bob. Maryann said, glaring at them. "Yeah, go back under that rock you three came from." Micky said, getting up off the ground. "Oh, you gonna make us, city slicker?" Bob said, as he and his friends came closer. "We don't make trash, we burn it." Mike said, standing next to Micky. "Perhaps you need a mud bath too, Tex." Jim growled. Bob, Jim and Ted charged Mike and Micky, but at the last second, they stepped aside and the three of them slipped on the mud and went down. Quickly, the Monkees and Maryann dumped hay on them, so that the hay would stick to their clothes and skin. In a few seconds, the three bullies were covered in hay and mud. It was now the Monkees and Maryann's turn to laugh, along with the other riders at the ranch. "We'll get you city slickers for this!" Ted yelled, shaking a fist at them. "You boys are ones who look pretty slick right now!" Davy laughed. "Not to mention you stink." Maryann added. The three bullies got up and walked away, still trying to pull off all the hay covering their bodies. Maryann turned to Peter and his friends. "C'mon, Davy and Micky." She said, "I'm good friends with the daughter of the owner here. You can bathe and get into some clean clothes." "Thanks, Maryann." Micky said as he followed her back to the ranchhouse. After Micky and Davy cleaned up, they went back to Peter's house. Peter's family was shocked but not surprsied when they were told what had happened. "Those three were always trouble." Mr. Tork said, shaking his head. "I lost count how many times I gave them detention or talked to their parents about their behavior, but they never changed." "At least you gave them a taste of their own medicine." Chris said proudly. "Yeah, but we're gonna have to watch our backs a lot better." Peter said, "At least until we leave." "Well, the contests will be soon." Virginia said, "So you'll have to watch out." The next day, the guys were at the mill practicing for their various contests. Unlike yesterday, Jim, Bob and Ted were nowhere to be found. Mike went into the barn to practice his cow milking. The barn appeared to be deserted, except for a few cows waiting patiently to be milked. Since the others were busy, Mike had gone in alone with just a bucket and a timer. Mike started the timer and got to work milking. He was slowly getting the hang of it, and his hands didn't hurt like they did yesterday. Mike was so involved in his milking, he didn't notice the shadow fall upon the cow he was working on. He did notice the heavy object hitting the back of his head and his world going black. A little ways away from the barn, Peter was tossing eggs to Micky, when Maryann happened to notice smoke rising a short distance away. "Hey, look!" Maryann exclaimed, right after Peter had thrown an egg. Micky looked away from the egg to Maryann and the egg landed right on his head. "That wasn't funny, Maryann." Micky said, then noticed both she and Peter looking at the smoke. "I think it's coming from the barn." Peter said. Davy joined them when he also saw the smoke. "I think Mike went to the barn to practice milking." He said. The four of them rushed over to see the barn in flames! "MIKE!!" They shouted. "I'll get the cows out, you three look for Mike." Maryann said. They all rushed into the barn. The hay inside was on fire. As Maryann began to lead the cows out, Micky noticed a pair of legs half-stuck out of a haystack. "Mike!" Micky yelled, as he and the other two ran over. They quickly pulled Mike from under the hay and carried him out of the barn. Davy then helped Maryann lead the cows out while Peter ran to call the fire department. A few minutes later, the fire department came and put out the blaze. Luckily, Maryann and Davy had removed all of the cows and the firemen were able to quickly contain the fire and kept it from spreading. By this time, Mike was awake and sitting on the grass surrounded by the others. He had told them what had happened. "It had to be Jim, Bob and Ted." Micky said angrily. "We have no proof." Maryann replied, shaking her head. Peter's family came running over. Word of the fire had quickly spread. "Is everyone alright?" John Tork asked. "We're fine, Dad." Peter answered. "The barn isn't so lucky, but Mike and the cows are safe." "That's good to hear." Virginia said, "There's another barn down the road the cows can be placed. The July 4th contests will still go on." "I think I know who did this." Nick said. "We all do." Mike replied, "But they won't stop us from entering the contests." Everyone nodded their heads in agreement. To Be Continued.... Here goes... A half hour later found the four Monkees and Maryann on the front porch sipping iced tea, courtesy of Mrs. Tork. She came out of the house and asked, "Refills, anyone?" Peter thankfully accepted a refill, but the others refused. "Two glasses is enough, Virginia," Davy said, then looked by where the barn stood smoldering and sat back in thought. Noticing his strange expression, Mike asked, "What is it, shotgun?" "I was wondering," the Englishman began, "if we should go look around the barn for any evidence." "Good idea!" Maryann stated. "The smoke is almost all cleared away, and it shouldn't be too hot over there anymore." "Now you boys be careful," Virginia cautioned, "That barn is all eaten up on the inside and ready to collapse. I think we've had enough excitement for one day, so please try to stay out of trouble." "Will do, mom," Peter promised as they headed down from the porch. A few minutes later they reached the barn, once red, but now sort of a blackish-brown. "Eeghw, it's a mess!" Micky commented, "Where should we start??" "Well, I think we should split up and surround the area," Mike suggested. "Shout if you find anything, okay?" The five spread out around the barn, each looking in a different spot: Peter searched in some singed trees, Maryann examined the shack nearby, Davy examined the water trough, Mike searched the outside of the barn, and Micky started down a path by the barn. Before long, Micky looked down and noticed something. Footprints! He called out to the others and it wasn't long before they came running. "That's them all right," Peter said, examining the prints, "No one else in town has feet that big! We'll have to show these to the police!" "That won't be necessary," an unmistakeable voice sounded behind them and they turned around to see Jim, Bob, and Ted! "You can't stop us!" Micky said heroically, "You're outnumbered five to three!" "Oh, yeah?" Bob asked, and four other guys, just as big as the bullies, stepped out from the nearby trees. "Meet my cousins, Fred, Tom, Hank and Sam." Oh no! what's gonna happen next?? I just got a great idea for this (I just hope I don't throw Laura's story off kilter) Jim, Bob, Ted, Fred, Tom, Hank and Sam had the four Monkees and Maryann surrounded. The guys formed a circle around Maryann. "You're all coming with us." Jim said nastily. "We're gonna show you city slickers what we do to people who can't mind their own business." "Let Maryann go." Peter said. "Aww, you afraid for her, big Pete?" Bob sneered. "Let's go or we'll have to get rough." But before they could make a move, everyone heard sirens coming towards them. Without a word, the seven men quickly ran off. Greatly relieved, the Monkees and Maryann looked over to see several Bureau of Fire Inspection cars driving over. "Whew, that was close." Micky said. "Yeah, good thing the inspectors are here to investigate how the fire started." Mike said. "It shouldn't take them long to figure out it was arson." "Lets show them the footprints, too." Peter said. "What about Jim's gang?" Davy asked. "We can't prove anything." Maryann said, "They can claim they caught us snooping around." "Which we were." Peter added. The others hushed him as one of the inspectors came over. "What are you five doing here?" He asked. "You can't be walking around. This barn could collapse and besides, we have to find out what happened here." "We were just looking, sir." Micky said, "We found these footprints." He pointed to the ground. "Ok, we'll get casts made of them. Thanks for your help, but I think it best if you stayed away for now." The inspector said. "We will, thank you." Davy said as he and the others walked away. As they walked back to Peter's house, the five of them decided not to say anything to Peter's family. As they climbed back on the porch, Maryann turned to the others. "I have to go back to the ranch." She said, "I promised to help teach a new student how to ride." "I'll go with you." Peter said. "No that's ok, Peter." Maryann replied, "I'll be fine." "We gotta rehearse anyway, Peter." Mike added, "It's been a few days since we did that." "I'll see you later, then." Maryann said, giving Peter a kiss on the cheek. "Bye, Maryann." The Monkees replied. A short time later, the Monkees were rehearsing on the Tork's back porch. Mike was singing the lead in one of their newest songs. "What am I doin' hanging 'round?" Mike sang, "I should be on that train and gone. I should be riding on that train to San Antone. What am I doing hangin' 'round?" The song finished and Micky commented that that song was appropriate for what's happening to them. "Well, we'll be gone in a few days, and those bullies..." Mike's sentence was cut short as a knife slammed into the post a few inches above his head. The Monkees ducked down, but nothing else came at them. Gathering up his nerve, Mike stood up and looked at the knife imbedded in the porch post. The knife had a piece of paper stuck to it. Mike grabbed the paper and pulled it free. "What is it, Mike?" Davy asked. Mike's face went white as he read the letter aloud. "Dear city slickers," Mike read, "We have Maryann. You boys will let us win the contests or she will be sorry. Do not tell anyone about this or go to the police. Signed, you know who." "Oh, no. Maryann!" Peter cried, collapsing to the floor. "If you guys win the contest, something will happen to Maryann," said Peter. "How can somebody do something like that?"said Virgina. "Not somebody, somebodies," said Mike. "Not only do those guys want us to lose the contest," said Davy. "But they want use to keep our mouths shut about what happened at the barn," Micky finished. "I wonder when the police will have any proof that those trouble making boys did it," said John. "According to the inspector, not for a few days," said Micky. "But the events are the day after tommorrow," said Davy. "What I want to know is how did that fire got started in the first place," said Mike. "But all the police found were footprints," said Peter. Awhile later, Virgina was still in the living room, playing a board game with Anne and Chris, John was in his study grading some papers, and the Monkees were holding a conference in Peter's room. "I hope Maryann's ok," said Peter, lowering his head. "Don't worry old buddy, I'm sure she's fine," said Mike. Just then there was a knock at the door. "Who's there?" Peter asked. "It's Me," said Nick from behind the door. "Come in." "Hey, you guys still talking about those jerks?" asked Nick. "Yeah, plus how the firs at the barn got started," said Davy. "I have a plan, it maybe crazy, but I think we can go down to the mill and see if the police missed anything." "That does sound crazy," said Peter. "But we'll do it," said Micky. "And since you suggested that plan, you can come with us to help,"Peter said to Nick. "Thanks bro," said Nick. And the five of them worked on a plan.
