It was announced yesterday that petrol prices will rise about 2p per litre from October - that takes it to way over £1 a litre - more like £1.10 in ome places.
A guy in the paper today said that it cost him more than £90 to fill up his car - that's about $180

There's a Kroger (local grocery store) gas station nearby that has a sign on every pump, stating that you can only have one car per fill up (because of
their Plus Card discount per gallon), and you can only have 30 gallons at a time. Crazy! My dad has a full-size Ford van that he uses for work - it has duel
fuel tanks, way more than 30 gallons combined, so he couldn't even fill it up there.

I remember waiting in long lines for gas back in the 80's. I used to get up early to get in line before the gas station opened and I would bring my pillow
and go back to sleep in the car til it opened! It was ridiculous! I guess things really haven't changed that much over the years. The prices just get
higher! I never saw that video before. That was pretty funny!

It's being said it will get to be about $4 a gallon by the summer! That is disgusting.

I just saw on the online local paper, that here in gorda,california the price of gas is 5 bucks a gallon. Man it's starting to look high now.

Where I live, gas is between $4.24-$4.30 gallon, but we use the metric system, so it's actually $1.12-$1.14 litre. We also have regulated gas prices, so
depending on the world market value, they can increase or decrease. Prices are adjusted twice a month, most cities don't have regulated systems and they
can put the price up to whatever they feel like charging.

Wow - $1.12 a litre - that's amazing! Why is petrol so cheap in the US & Canada and (I think) more than twice the price in the UK?!

It's a matter of Taxes El.
Trust me, our local state and federal/national Governments make a lot of money just off the taxes and tariffs alone. It is higher in Europe because of the Taxes. The base price of the finished product doent change, except perhaps delivery but that should not be the variable. Go to this link. It sort of explains some of the methodology. http://www.eia.doe.gov/oiaf/archive/issues98/gastax.html . I think this info is a bit dated. If I recall from a year or 2 ago almost 35- 40% of the pump Price of Gas in Michigan was due to the Federal, local and State imposed taxes (and what the convenience store owners can squeeze out and get away with). Thanks for going through all the BD, I think a detailed explanation of all this helps. I realize that it is very complicated how gas is priced. I know GA has
among the lowest taxes on gasoline as compared to other US states. I forget exactly, but I think the rate is around 27% for all taxes on GA, so the price here
is a bit lower than most other states. FL, otoh, has higher taxes on gas, so you definitely pay more once you cross the state line into FL, it is about .15-.25
higher there. We notice gas prices day to day much more than we do other products because they fluctuate so much as commodities do.
It is all about taxes, the gov'ts tax gasoline in some areas like crazy - in Europe and Canada, particularly. I am sure other places as well, those are the places I have visited or lived, so I know a bit more first hand. One thing in Europe is, a significant number of people do not own automobiles, they rely on very good public transportation, which we don't have for the most part here in the US. If I lived in Europe again, I would not own a car. It costs a lot to live in many places there anyway and a car would definitely cost much more than it does to have as a near necessity in the US in most areas. I love great public transportation, it is just a darn shame, we do not have it here in the US outside of a few larger cities such as NYC, DC, Chicago and SF. |

All to often people will gripe & complain and rant without doing a little homework. They want the Government to come and save them when in reality many of our woes and ills of our countries are created by the government. Land of the free! Yeah right! How interesting that the early colonists, as the history books explained it when I was growing up, left Europe because of taxation. That might have been true to some extent because I think a lot of history has been watered down and romanticized, but today we are actualy roped into the same Taxation without representation. And the "a little homework" is so easy now with just going online and researching the topic. So there are even fewer reasons NOT to research a topic
for the masses. You are spot on about people wanting gov't to do this and that for them (that's the Libertarian in me screaming such things to people
with whom I can talk current events). ... Oh well, the future doesn't seem to bode well regarding gov't growth, spending, etc.
Now, I wonder if gas will ever go below 2.00 a gallon again, I do wonder ...... I have my doubts ... Gosh, I really, really want to be wrong here! One thing that gets me is we complain about this, but what about the cost of everything else, things definitely do not go up in price at the same rate over time, that's for sure! If I have it right, gas in the US now costs (adjusted for inflation) just a bit more than it did in the early 1980s when it went over 1.30 a gallon back then.

Yes indeed - and it suddenly occured to me that in the UK we have a few more things to pay for with our taxes than you might in the US - the National Health Service being one such example. elxxx

$28.00. I live in NC where gas is almost $3.30 for one gallon for regular kind.

We are now up to $3.79 per gallon. I stay inside as much as possible and don't drive unless I absolutely have to. When I filled my car up the other day it
was $43.00 and I have a 12-gallon tank.

This is just terrible, isn't it? I say we may really be starting to hear people complaining and taking alternative action, so as not to use gas - I mean, it probably won't be long before it gets around $5 a gallon! I'm not sure who would stand for that, would you? I've heard that there are those who are selling their SUV's and the like. Used car lots are startiing to see many coming in.

SUVs are being referred to as "Gas Hogs" by alot of people. I'm glad I went for a Cavalier. It gets around 25 miles per gallon.

Gas in my neck of the woods is at $3.60 a gallon. I was reading last week that people have been siphoning gas from gas tanks because of the gas prices being so
high.

That is so sad Cindy. So sad
Laura was telling me a long time ago that people in Florida started pouring the leftover grease (I think it was grease) from fast food places in their gas tanks to run their cars. I would be too afraid of doing such a thing.
