	SPRING IS HERE - Hoboken kicks off the spring season with its 14th annual Arts & Music Festival on Sunday, May 4 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. with artists, craftspeople, musicians including Micky Dolenz of the popular 1960s band the Monkees, food and merchandise vendors, and entertainment for adults and kids alike.

And what kind of impact has the Monkees legacy had on today's audience?

"The music holds up today better than ever," Dolenz explains. "When Smash Mouth did their version of 'I'm A Believer' for Shrek, I think a lot of people searched out the original. A good song ... is a good song. No question."

As he tours more and more, Dolenz adds that the festival just seemed like a perfect show to do.

"I love the East Coast ... terrific audiences!"

But Dolenz is just one of many performers scheduled to take to the stages.

Hoboken favorite local rock band, The Fave, will perform songs from their soon-to-be-released album "Tomorrow's June."

The Blue Vipers of Brooklyn recently won the Subway Idol contest on The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet, for their jazzy blues sound that is reminiscent of the 1920s and '30s along with original tunes in four-part harmony.

Hoboken's own '70s and '80s rock band, Krystal, is back together and will return to the stage with their covers of hits from Led Zeppelin, Bad Company, Kansas, and Styx.

Charay, also hailing from Hoboken and known for Latin jazz-rock., will be doing classic and contemporary hits.

The Sensational Soul Cruisers will bring their 11-piece band with five-voice Motown and Philly-style soul.

Zydecoal has evolved from swamp pop and Cajun-stylings with spiced up Louisiana dance hall music.

The Fuzzy Lemons and Star Fish are two "family-friendly" bands that will perform on the Third Street stage.

What's that logo?

What does that brand logo on the clothing of a passerby mean to them, anyway?

That's what photographer Craig Wallace Dale, a Hoboken resident, hopes to discover at the festival. Dale will invite festival patrons to take part in "The Logo Project" by answering a few simple questions about logos on their clothing or accessories, and they'll get a free professional 8-by-10 portrait for participating.

"The project is to make photograph and video clips of anybody who comes to the booth wearing a corporate logo, so Hollister or Abercrombie & Fitch, [etc.]," says Dale. "I'm attempting to use an interaction with people on the streets as my artistic practice," he says, adding that for this conceptual piece of art, he will, "ask people about the logos they're wearing and let them think about what they're wearing and why they're wearing it."

Explaining that his first time at the festival is really just about talking to people, Dale adds, "I have found in doing a few of these that the reality of what people have to say is far more interesting than anything I could hope for, and that's why this practice is working so well for me," and this practice is ongoing in his studio at the Monroe Center.

A 4-year veteran of the festival and 6-year Hoboken resident, Sarah Detweiler, paints, but she's showing her Rubyhand t-shirt designs this time around.

"It's all my original artwork that I silkscreen," says Detweiler of her t-shirts, which she sells at Galatea Lingerie on Washington Street. "It's my favorite two days of the year because it pulls in all the people who make Hoboken so special together. There's always great music, great talent, and great food."

Other members of the local art community will bring oil paintings, watercolors, acrylics, sculpture, pottery, glass, furniture, candles, and much more.

Food and fun

Celeste Governanti, who moved to Hoboken 8 years ago, has always loved to bake, but now she's debuting her Web-based business, Made With Love (www.madewithloveorganics.com) at the festival.

"I'm opening with cookies and granola, and everything is made with 100 percent certified organic ingredients," says Governanti. "I'll be making American favorites," which includes milk chocolate chip with walnuts, the Gargantua (a giant cookie with chocolate chunks and walnuts), and the Good Morning Sunshine (a breakfast cookie made with fresh squeezed organic orange juice, carrots, apples, and raisins).

Teddy Abramo, event manager for Luca Brasi and a Hoboken native, says "We actually have two stands because the response was so overwhelming ... People come up and tell us that they've been waiting all year for us to come back."

Luca Brasi will offer finger foods, such as fresh mozzarella salad, rice balls, five cheese ravioli, grilled balsamic chicken sandwiches with fresh mozzarella, and chicken tenders.

Got a craving for something international? Choose from Thai, Indian, Greek, French, Mexican, Cajun, and Italian food at booths throughout the festival.

Geri Fallo thinks the festival as a whole contains just the right mix of fun for everyone.

"Maybe we've created the right formula: If you build it, they will come," she laughs. "We built it, and they do come, and they have a good time."
