I'm not trying to get into personal topics about Peter but, how much of that stuff on AMM should I take seriously? I just started reading some of that
stuff recently and found it very disturbing where Peter is concerned. My own opinion is that there are some very mean & negative people who post on that
site, who have nothing important to say. I guess I'm hoping for validation of that. Again, I'm not asking that any particular rumors be commented on.
I'm just wondering about the motivations of the people who post.

Granted, it's been a long time since I've hung out at AMM, but as far as that newsgroup goes...and really, all of Usenet in general, you have to take a
lot of what is posted worth a grain of salt. Newsgroups, being the cyberspace equivalent to the lawless "Wild, Wild West" if you will, draws a lot of
would-be trollers and spammers. A lot of these people are out to get a rise out of somebody just for the "fun of it". That isn't to say that
there aren't a lot of good, knowledgeable fans there, too. The trick is being able to tell the two apart. Hang out there long enough, and you'll begin
to get an idea of who is full of it and who isn't.

AMM is on the Usenet and the Usenet itself is very outdated (it was all the rage in the 90s, but beyond that time, usage has largely tappered off). People post
on web message boards and blogs now instead of posting on the Usenet which is well over 25 years old. And Shane is right, anyone can post there, there is no
moderation for most groups. Some people are just "trolling" - posting garbage in essence to get a response because they want attention for whatever
reason. I quit using it for the most part (other than some research) because one of my favorite areas of the Usenet got taken over by racists.

That explains why there hasn't been too much posted in recent years. I'd say the message boards I visit are much better. I also understand why Peter
said in an interview that he hated AMM. I think I'll avoid those pages from now on.

....So it used to be different in the 90's? I mean for e-mail groups and message boards, blogs, etc. It was different than now? Hmm, probably because by
the millenium to be online has exploded than at first? More places, more options a person has?

So it used to be different in the 90's? I mean for e-mail groups and message boards, blogs, etc.Right, Rachael. As the numbers of people who went online grew like crazy during the late 90s and into the early 00s, so did creating websites, and developing message boards, and later blogs. Also, webhosting itself got cheaper and cheaper, so more people took it on to create websites, along with the growth of people going online. AMM was THE place for Monkees back in the 90s, heck, at some point Nez posted on there, in 1996, I believe. There was a time it was awful, lots of fighting between fans. It is all archived, so one can go read it, and that and other places online about the Monkees prompted Lucy to create Monkeeland, because other message boards and places were full of trolls. |

marnweb wrote: You ain't kiddin'. When I was posting there, the two big factions were the Davy only fans and the Peter only fans, and the two seemed to mix like oil and water. And what makes matters sort of worse is that usenet gives a person the option to post what you want, when you want, under relative anonymity so there aren't any repercussions if a line is crossed beyond killfiling the user and ignoring their posts. But yes, Nez did post there at one time, and I think Micky did too once or twice. That was a long time ago, though. Shane

When I read the archives, it seemed like there were some very mean people posting. I pretty much came away with the feeling that Peter Tork was the devil
incarnate and so were all his supporters. At least, that's the way his non-supporters portrayed them. Of course, I know that's not true. The people
on this board are great.

Just as was said then - I can remember people saying that there were no restrictions by the govt or just about anyone else that were placed on the web as far
as interactions with people - and then boom! It took off like wildfire. This example is probably typical, people fighting with one another online. I'm glad
to see Monkeeland is just not that way.

This example is probably typical, people fighting with one another online. I think the anonymity makes some people out there get nasty and trollish online, because they *assume* they are anonymous when going online and visiting websites and posting, this and that. The thing is in nearly all cases, they are not anonymous and can be traced down. The ones who know how to go online and visit places anonymously are few and far in between. I know ML has to screen posters here and for good reason. |

Reading AMM archives and some other message boards (over on IMDB) makes me appreciate that respect for others is demanded on this site. It's nice to post
on a board where I don't have to worry that I'll get called a few unsavory names.

To be fair to AMM, it wasn't all bad. Yes, it had MORE than it's fair share of trolls and flamers, but some of the "conversations" there left
me in stitches on a regular basis.
