I remember when I was commuting to Naperville for employment and gas was $1.89 a gallon. There is no way I would commute with the prices now unless I stayed at
an extended stay hotel during the week and came home on weekends.

Writer2Be2007, how far was your commute? Just curious.
The lowest price I can recall of gasoline since I can remember back to the 70s is .66 per gallon in March 1999 for unleaded regular! If you look at graph charts of gas prices, that was the time the price of gas bottomed out in recent decades. / yesterday I paid 3.49 a gallon and I thought that was the "deal" locally - highest price for regular unleaded I have seen is 3.79 lately. It will be over $4 everywhere in the US, I fear, and soon. If I could and it made sense to I would use public transportation. |

my commute Marnie was 1 hour and 30 minutes long one way. I used to have to leave my house by 5 am in the morning to be at work at 6:30 am. And traffic was
just as busy at 5 am than any other time of day, I couldn't believe it. But it was well worth watching the sun come up and seeing all the beauty around me

That's a long commute, Cheri. I believe you about the 5 AM drivers. Amazing that so many are up that morning in larger cities, honestly. The longest
commute by car I did was about 50 min each way or 35 miles. My job now is roughly 15 miles away now, not bad most of the time.

I was driving about 78 miles one way. I must say though it did make the day go by a lot quicker with almost a 3 hour drive total to and from work. But then you
were so exhausted on the drive home you had to really concentrate hard on getting home safely. I remember some nights I would work till 4:30 - 5 pm or longer
and then drive home. When I worked my previous job before that one in Naperville, I would work till 10 pm at night and drive home getting home around 11:30 or
midnight, which was very hard especially when you were in whiteout conditions from snowfall.

Yes Cheri, it is sad. And actually, it was a month ago that this was happening. Not last week. I swear I'm losing my mind....Doh!
Here is a video link- http://www.cbs46.com/cobbnews/15907704/detail.html It happened at the apartment complex where we used to live which was a really nice place at one time. With gas prices approaching $4 a gallon, this may become popular - siphoning. On Tuesday, Marietta police arrested three men who allegedly used a gas can and a garden hose to siphon gasoline from a Mercury Marquis, a Jeep Liberty, a Ford Explorer and a GMC Sonoma. They also used the tools to suck gas from a Pontiac and Buick, according a police incident report. prices go up," said Officer Mark Bishop, a police spokesman. "They were stealing from several cars in the same complex, probably for their own use or possibly to sell."Police arrested Ted K. Mbaya of Dallas, and Kevin M. Gitonga and George Mwangi, both of Marietta. Mbaya and Gitonga, both 20, told police they were students. All three ran when officers approached them in the parking lot of the Silvercreek apartments at 1776 Roswell Road. Two of the suspects, Mwangi, 19, and Gitonga were shot with Tasers. Mwangi was hit with Taser prongs twice. The first time only one prong stuck to Mwangi, who kept running. The second time, the two prongs hit their target. Mwangi "was apprehended with no injuries," according to the incident report. The men were each charged with felony obstruction and misdemeanor theft by taking. http://www.ajc.com/services/content/metro/cobb/stories/2008/04/16/siphon_0417.html

I don't think there's much of that going on - but a lot of people try and use the red diesel which is supposed to only be for farm vehicles rather than
the normal stuff. Does that happen in the US too? Right now, diesel is more expensive than petrol and 1 litre of unleaded petrol is about £1.11 (or about
$8.50/ USgallon), so you can understand why. In fact on the news they said that some of the smaller haulage companies are going out of business simply because
they can't afford the fuel costs.
Actually, everything's getting more expensive - I bought two boxes of cereal and an own-brand loaf of bread and it came to over £5 (almost $11) today - I couldn't believe it. elxxx

What has been on the news sometimes lately here is that people are driving away from the pumps more. The debate is if it were a common enough occurrence and
just didn't get much publicity, or if they are just now beginning to take it without paying.
A segment on gas prices on Fox news had the newswoman in a BP lot and the lot was empty because no one was getting gas - then she came back on later in the show, and said they were asked to move across the street, it was bad for business for people to see the station empty.

Ouch, Cheri, that was a long commute.
Cindy, a few years ago someone stole an entire tank of gas from my car while I was at work! The price of gas at that time may have been around $2 a gallon if that. The NCAA games were going on, so the parking lot I used was full of partiers. I had fueled up that morning and was totally empty when I drove home! I need to get a lock for my gas cap, I am afraid. I do get to work from home some, so that saves me some $$. |

They had an article in the newspaper a few days ago about three different people who drove off from a gas station after filling their tanks without paying and
that the survelance cameras got them all and their licence plate numbers and the police went and got the people and now they are facing charges. Needless to
say,I haven't heard of any drive-offs around here after that.

Yeah, I was thinkin about getting a gas cap as well, Marn. Better to be safe than sorry....I used to have one way back in the early 90's when I was being
stalked (long story). Anyhoo, that person got into my gas tank and then he messed with my brakes.

And the price of gold has drastically dropped from $1013 an ounce to about $850 an ounce. This happened within the past month.

All petrol caps lock don't they?! Well, I don't know of any car here that doesn't have one which locks - either that or you need to pop it open
from inside the car like you would your bonnet. Also, almost all petrol stations have automatic number plate recognition CCTV cameras so if you do drive off
without paying you automatically get a hefty fine. I think they can even prosecute if they want.
Ray - why has gold dropped? Have they found more? elxxx

I think gold has dropped such a drastic amount because of the huge amount of people that are selling their gold in order to get money to pay bills etc.
It's like in 1979 when silver went up to $50 an ounce, but just a day or two later it was back down to $2 an ounce because of the people all of a sudden
flooding the market with silver.

That's an excellent observation, Ray, because I remember back at that time gold was around $1000 an ounce.
Gas prices where I live? In a word - SCANDALOUS.

Right now I think the cheap stuff that I get is about $3.69/ gallon. When we were in L.A. it was nearly $4.00 I actually want to fill up my tank today before
the weekend when the prices get more inflated. I've noticed a lot more people around town riding their bikes for errands or to work if they live in town.
I've been walking to pick up my daughter from school since the weather has been pleasant, unless we're not going directly home.

It was $3.89 around here this weekend. GRRRR!!!! Thankfully I'm at 3/4 a tank and don't have to fill up for quite a while yet. But I agree they are
scandalous prices.
Oh yes and the drive-offs. HEHE they have video cameras all around the gas stations that get your lovely picture at the pump, plus your license plates front and back, make and model of the car. Anyone that thinks they are going to be smooth and escape, HEHEHE you will get caught, as Ray said in his article those three did get caught. Yep. There is no escaping video cameras, they are all around us even behind mirrors in dressing rooms in stores. I refuse to try on clothes in a store now because I know they are there watching me.
