...there is one church, a jr. high, an elementary school (where my daughter attends), and an off-leash dog park. Down the road a bit is a Raley's grocery
store and small shopping center. What's in yours?

In my neighborhood there are lots of houses, a walking trail, and a public golf course across the street.

Oh boy. Well, I live above a music store (they sell instruments, not like albums and stuff). Across the street is a laundromat, a video rental place, and some
empty buildings. Next door is an empty corner store. Other side there's a little restaurant, and an internet cafe/taco express. Then there's a beat up
old house where the druggies hang out, two bars, a real estate agency, a little park, a few shops down the street the other way- a second hand store, a
florist, a tae kwon do place..... a garage, a Mac's corner store, a hair stylist, some sort of law place.... a couple more empty buildings, a salon, a
couple pawn shops, and I'm about a 5 minute walk from the mall. I love my apartment, but the neighbourhood leaves something to be desired!

Petey - your place sounds like fun!
I live near an industrial estate so there are lots of factories and houses and a small parade of shops with a supermarket, tobacconist, laundrette, butcher and so on. There are a couple of parks too, but they're not really safe and one of them had all its slides and swings removed because of vandalism. There are also a couple of schools and a baptist church. elxxx

My neighborhood kind of sounds similar in some ways to Petey's. I live close enough to downtown that all the attractions there are within close walking
distance...library, restaurants/cafes, CD store, bars, converted movie set

My neighborhood isn't as quiet as it used to be. I live near a very busy road that is loaded with traffic, because there is constant building going on
here. Not just new houses and stores, but I don't know how many hotels we need in this town?? We have a few pizza places and fast food joints, a
Gold's Gym, All Sport, ShopRite, CVS, and other stores in these plazas. Restaurants and several bars, and my nasty old elementary school is not very far
away. The local mall was torn down and now we have a Home Depot instead. Your usual small town-being turned into a big town kind of thing.
Edit: How could I forget? Walmart is pretty close. |

Oh, I guess I forgot to mention that the neighborhood I live in is mostly houses. A lot are just like ours, kind of medium, family-sized, but if you walk a
few blocks west of us there are several "mini-mansions".

I'm in one of those in between spots. There's housing and such all immediately around me. But the next major street south is full of various business
and stores, where to the north are the scatered little local cities (Westmont, Downers Grove, etc). Too much to describe.

In my neighborhood, I have two daycare centers (well one is a montessori school), restuarants across the street, lawyers offices, Kroger (grocery store) ,
dentist, a re-bath place, thrift store, dollar store, and elementary school, Methodist Church, Shell gas station, liquor store, Walgreens, Wendy's, Taco
Bell, KFC, McDonald's, Krystal's, Citco gas station, Old Time Pottery. So much stuff around my neighborhood.
I've been to Downers Grove.

Besides all the other houses, right next door is a flower shop and a hair salon. Right next to them is a busy highway and right across the highway is a
shopping center with Home Depot, Giant supermarket, Wawa, Dairy Queen, Starbucks, Rite Aid, Citi Financial, Philly Pretzel, Keystone Bank, Mocha Mikes, A
Hallmark store and some others I can't remember. Between Starbucks, Wawa & Mocha Mikes we have a coffee war going on here. All within walking distance
are the schools (high school, middle & elementary) Walgreens, Arbys, Kmart, Burger King, Wendys, Taco Bell, Eyeland, and so many more I would run out of
room.

We have two homes. One is in Freeport, which is a small town with one stoplight. It's more of a retirement town. They roll up the sidewalks at 10pm each
night.
The other home is in the country and is on about 6 acres, might be 8. But it's secluded and allows for privacy.

Directly across the street from me is the back end of a highschool, and their football field. (I only had to walk across the street to vote this morning,
because the h.s. was the voting place - Indiana primary is today.) I live in the downstairs apt of a brown and white house on the corner with my 25 yr-old son.
Then at the other end of the block is the expressway, 80/94, which goes right into IL and west of Chicago, etc., and to the east it goes to MI. (It's an
overpass section and has sound barriers - that makes the traffic sound like traffic in a distance at night.) My neighborhood also has a bike trail right behind
it, well, the end of Hammond's and connecting to Highland. 2 blocks east is a main street US 41 or Indianapolis Boulevard. If I took 41 south a couple
hundred miles, I'd come to Brown County and Turkey Run Park, and places where they got all those covered bridges. There's also I-65, it starts on the
east of Gary....north is Lake Michigan, when I am at the local beach I can see the Chicago skyline. The clearer days, Sears Tower comes clear into view.
Right south of me is also the Little Calumet River, which is the dividing line between Hammond and Munster. The river is not real big or wide at all but it does flood out now and then, I think it may have been large 300 years ago when the Indians were around. There's the Grand Calumet River right past the State Line of IN/IL, so it must be connected to that one or something. Last year I was on a plane ride of the area, and I was surprised to see that where I live seems to be part of the spread out of urban life right from the Loop! "Whoa", I said. It is always strange to see your world from a different perspective, isn't it? Looked to me that once one gets past Crown Point, the urban sprawl begins to diminish.

I'm near power lines, in a neighborhood of older homes with tons of pine trees: I could walk to a local grocery store, ace hardware and laundromat, but I
prefer to drive. It's very ethnically diversified in my neighborhood, tower of babel, so to speak. Like you, Tom, I am near the airport, but luckily not
much airplane noise here, only when it rains they fly low near us.

There's a county in West Virginia called Paw Paw (It's true. Look it up). Imagine if they had one of those convenience stores called Wawa in that
county. "Let's go to the Wawa in Paw Paw."
