I got my Monkees Season One DVD in the mail today. It just arrived. I was home on the computer so I heard the mailman come to the door and drop it off. I
paid for shipping with Amazon (I usually do the free shipping), and I have to say they didn't even pack it as well as they usually do with free shipping.
The box looks like someone used it for a kickball, it was torn open with a rubber band around it, and there is a postal sticker on it saying "Received in
Damaged Condition". I'm really annoyed, as it cost over $80. Well, I didn't even open the DVDs yet, since I was online and already visiting
Monkeeland today, I figured I would post here first. I'm off to check it out. I just hope the discs are fine. Otherwise it's off to complain to
Amazon or the post office.

That's too bad about the packaging being in such bad condition, but I hope the dvds are okay for you! Unfortunately those little cardboard boxes, while
cute, don't hold up very well.

I can't remember exactly who it was,but I'm pretty sure it might of been Marnie (Marnweb) that ordered her Monkees DVDs through maybe Amazon and when
she got the package, the boxes that are made like record players were crushed.

Oooh thankfully mine that I ordered from Amazon weren't crushed at all. I would have been sooooooooooo mad had they been. And believe me, I will complain
if I need to. Just ask my employers. LOL! They know I tell it flat how it is. I refuse to take crap from anyone, and especially something I paid a lot of money
for.
I bought the entire set off Amazon.com (Seasons 1 and 2). Over $150.00 and then shipping (although I can't remember if I had free shipping or not). Hmmm. Anyway, mine came fine. The picture on their website does not do the record boxes justice though, as I was expecting life size record player-type things, not tiny-sized (no offense to any little people. I love you all). But anyway, I hope your DVDs worked out fine! Keep us updated. I saw a beautiful little person at the store the other day. A beautiful woman. I spoke to her as I do all my customers. She was so sweet! She was the first little person I had seen in my city, so that was very neat to know they are here too. Love always, Cheri

I have always thought the DVD package design of the Rhino The Monkees sets were very clever, but it's true that they are rather fragile. I used
to keep all my Monkees DVDs in the original packages, and after a lot of use (and some abuse, I'm afraid, by getting stuffed piled on them,
knocked off of shelves, etc.), I'm embarrassed to say that they are now in very sorry shape indeed and pretty much falling or fallen apart.
Ddb84, I hope your set turns out to be in better shape than the box it came in and that you will enjoy watching all those great episodes! |

When I bought the Monkees DVDs,I took all the DVDs out of the slip-cases and put them in those thin jewel cases that you can buy in the stores. Those thin
cases really add protection to those DVDs.

Yea, the delicate boxes are not very practical for every day use, so I put my Monkees DVDs in a CD case that holds up to 30 other DVDs and I zip it up when I
don't use them. Sometimes I do leave the DVDs out and they get a bit scratched, so I haven't been all that kind to mine either, LMB. My original boxes
are a bit damaged, too unfortunately. When I bought them, they were used, but I think the prior owners hardly used them as they appeared practically new at
that time.

And this year marking the 40th Anniversary of the movie HEAD,I still wonder if anything special is going to be released concerning that movie.

One can hope, Ray, but the Rhino Monkees site hasn't been updated in nearly a year. I don't think that things look terribly promising.

Hi everybody,
I'm happy to report that the DVDs look fine so far, no scratches that I noticed and what I've played so far looks great. I've watched most of discs 1 & 2, and a bit of 3 & 5 (I was going to try to watch them in order but then I had to watch Monkees on the Line and I Was a Teenage Monster) and everything looks good. Cheri, I thought it was going to be a little larger too. I wasn't expecting it as large as you were, but, a little bigger than the actual package. But it's a cute idea anyway. I was thinking that the sleeves aren't the greatest way to store the discs, like some other members have mentioned, but I don't plan on moving it around a lot so I think it's okay to leave them in there. I wish Rhino had been able to remove those vertical black lines that appear in several of the episodes. I don't remember noticing them when I watched the show a few years ago on television. But then, we didn't have a widescreen plasma tv at that time so maybe it is more noticeable on this one? Well, even so, I'm glad I bought it and it's lots of fun seeing these episodes again. I want to get Season Two sometime in the summer. I might try CD Universe but I'll see. I wouldn't buy any new releases of Head. I'm one of the fans that doesn't care for the movie. I bought the DVD a few years ago, and I think I watched it once all the way through, then I just kept skipping to my favorite scenes: the opening, "As We Go Along", the dandruff, "Daddy's Song", and that's all I remember right now. I tried watching it again recently and it still didn't appeal to me. I found an old thread in here about it, and I meant to reply in there. Someone mentioned that it could give you a headache if you thought about it too much--that did start to happen to me lol. So, now I just keep it as part of my Monkees collection, but I don't think I'd have bought it had I seen it on tv first. I like the music, and looking at the guys of course, but that's about it. I will buy a Deluxe BB&M---and any other deluxe CDs they come out with (yes maybe even the Head soundtrack |

What vertical black lines are you talking about? I've had my Monkees tv series DVDs for a few years now and I know we've watched all the episodes and I
cannot remember any vertical black lines.
You are right about the movie HEAD not being for everybody. In 1968 when it was released it was a flop and the Monkees fans stayed away because they wanted the movie to be a 90 minute tv episode. I like the movie alot. It's alot better,in my opinion, than some of those music movies that came out afterward.

I'm so glad the DVDs are in good shape and that you've been enjoying them, ddb84! I like the movie, Head, because I understand where The Monkees were coming from in making it, but it occurred to me the last time I watched it that
if I just happened to stumble across it on TV one night, without knowing anything about it or about The Monkees' history, I think I would be totally
weirded out by it. |

Back when I first saw the movie HEAD in about 1986,it was on Cinemax, but it was always being shown late at night. I remember having to set my VCR to tape it
because it was on at like 4am.

The black lines pop up several times that I've noticed. I can't say exactly which episodes right now, because there were several and I've watched
so many that I'd have to actually write it down to remember. Later tonight when I watch more, I'll make a note of it. I'll write down the scenes.
It happened on different discs, so I assumed it couldn't be a defective disc. Hmm, now you've got me wondering!! They go from the entire top to
bottom of the picture, and they move--I figured it was the age of the film and Rhino didn't bother to clean it up better. Now I don't know what to
think. Plus, it doesn't happen on every episode, so that makes it even more puzzling. I might be able to upload a portion of it sometime, but right now I
have no clue how to do that.
Has anyone else noticed this on their sets? Please someone say yes it's normal lol. |

Angie and I talked about it last night and she doesn't recall any black lines in the episodes either.

Maybe the earlier released DVDs are better? Just a guess because I can't figure it out.

I know we got our Monkees DVDs as soon as they came out.
One thing you may want to check is to make sure you are just hooked up from your DVD Player to the television because if you are hooked up from your DVD Player to a VCR and from the VCR to the tv,that can cause problems because the VCR may mis-read the signal coming through as that it is being copied and it may scramble or distort a DVDs picture. Older television sets do not have the red, white and yellow audio/video in and out jacks on the back and therefore some people use a VCR as a go-between.

I've been watching it on a new TV that my dad bought. My own tv is much smaller and old so I've been using this one to see the Monkees big &
clear.
I've also played the Our Favorite Episodes DVD this way, and it looked fine. Well, I'll post again sometime this weekend with some specific episodes/scenes and if anyone happens to have their DVDs handy, maybe you could let me know what yours is like!! I'd appreciate it. This is just weird. I'll also try the DVDs on my own player & tv just to see how it looks. |

There are some black lines in some episodes on the Rhino DVD set. One that comes to mind that needs a lot of cleaning up is the "Fairy Tale" - Some
other episodes are pretty clear, but here and there they are spotty. We talked about this before, thought been a while: the Columbia VHS sets that came out
earlier in the 90s are very clean and it had to do with the rights to the Monkees TV series. Rhino was not able to secure the best sources due to ownership by
Columbia, or something to that effect.
This complaint of poor picture quality was mentioned in some DVD reviews of the Monkees show on Amazon.

I went to Amazon to read the reviews that were less than 5 stars. Some customers mentioned dust and hairs (?). I really just noticed the lines. On the huge
tv screen, they really stand out, especially when there are a bunch in one shot.
I figured it had something to do with Rhino's end of it. Thanks everybody for trying to explain things. By the way, that is interesting about Rhino--I thought they owned it all. |

I did play the "Fairy Tale" DVD and you are right,Marnie. It really does need cleaning up. Just out of curiosity I played the "Fairy Tale"
from the Columbia House VHS tapes and it is so much clearer.
We compared some episodes from the Rhino DVDs to their twins in the Columbia House VHS tapes and the Columbia House tapes easily win out.
