Have any of you seen a British TV-movie called "Threads"? It was produced around the same time as "The Day After" here in the 'States
and dealt with the same theme - nuclear war and its horrific aftermath. Only I've heard that Threads is far more uncompromising and bleak. I understand it
covers some 10-12 years after the bomb, with hospitals have to resort to surgery without anesthesia, unschooled children wandering in packs like animals, and
other disturbing consequences. I don't dare watch it myself.

I stay away from both films, even though I know them quite well. The world that those movies depict is not one I want to be a part of.

I saw part of "The Day After" when it originally aired in 1983 and that was bad enough. There's enough despair around today without me watching
"Threads".
On a lighter note, does anyone remember some of the goofier Saturday morning British shows from the early 70s? There was a cartoon called "Tomfoolery", done in the spirit of Laugh-In with lots of rapid one-shot jokes and snappy patter. Then there was "The Double Deckers" about some kids who, ironically enough, lived in a double-decker bus! I also remember "The Bugaloos", although it may have been a Kroft Brothers show with a British cast.

I remember "The Bugaloos". Great show. American, not British, though,I believe. I vividly remember Mama Cass Elliot as a witch in one episode of that
show.

I must say, I am suprised to see the amount of British programs that everyone has watched. I completely agree Maria - I'm shocked that so much made it across the pond. I wonder how it compares - imports vs exports. Top Gear is ace - I've found Jeremy Clarkson's (sp?) books funny too - it's basically just him moaning!

I have seen some of Top Gear. Most recently when they had Ronnie Wood from Rolling Stones drive. He beat Helen Mirren and has not beaten Billie Piper.

"A&E" stands for "Arts & Entertainment". That channel owns "The Biography Channel",both channels were the ones that aired
the hour-long biography on the Monkees in about December 2007.

Thanks for the nudge, Tony! Yes, the George Smiley series on PBS starring Alec Guinness! Absolutely fantastic, one of the few items I rated 5 stars on Netflix. I have a fondness for gritty Cold War dramas with cynical wit attached. And of course...ANY DANG THING AT ALL with Patrick McGoohan. Yes, he's actually American, but "The Prisoner" and "Danger Man" are two of the most entertaining non-comedic British series I've ever seen. I'm saving up my money to buy the entirety of both series! I am definitely a fangirl of McGoohan. Re: "Robin Hood"...was that the "Robin of Sherwood" series in the 1980s? I recall how much I enjoyed that! Re: "The Bugaloos"...yes, that was American, one of those weird-fun Sid and Marty Krofft get togethers. Cass Elliott, I believe, was a guest star in the movie of another Krofft freakfest called "H.R. Pufnstuf" starring Jack Wild (R.I.P.). The name American star of "The Bugaloos" was classic American film comedienne Martha Raye as "Benita Bizarre". I recall watching that thing as a kid and wondering..."what IS this?". |

Dang, did I forget "The Avengers"? I never saw many episodes of that, but I have it coming up soon on my Netflix queue! I do recall that as a kid I thought it rather neat that this dapper British gent and this gal-pal of his who could fight off men fought crime together. Never saw "All Creatures", although I think Robert Hardy who played Leicester in "Elizabeth R" is in that? And yes, Ray, Google - I call it a cyber-girl's best friend! Also, what my memory doesn't provide, the time I invested in the past before the advent of the Internet in such archaic pursuits as libraries and books and fan magazines comes in handy, since reading about history and show business along with novels was my primary hobby since a youngster right along with watching TV shows and classic movies. That was before I decided to try my hand at writing scripts and stories myself...literally, with pencils on Xerox and lined composition paper. Yes, I'm that old. |
