Detroit did that 2 or 3 years ago. Made the cops go out on bike, those that didnt get laid off. That city has serious budget probelms though too.

The unemployment rate around here is up 40% over this time last year. Plus,the lucky ones who have jobs are now finding that in alot of places they are having
the emplyees work four 10 hour days instead of five eight hour days to save on gasoline.

...an interesting concept Ray, 4 10-hr days instead of 5 8-hr. Sometimes one hears about a shorter workweek being talked about....perhaps the ever-rising fuel
costs will make this a more common practice.
Oh no El! Less police on the streets? I hope it doesn't mean a spike in crime!

I do two 10 hour days, two 8 hour days and one 7 hour day per week. I don't know anyone else who does that!
I hope crime won't go up - England's pretty bad for crime as it is! elxxx

Hey as of today, my Shell gas station has it's gas prices at $3.95. The only reason why I go Shell to fill up is that they were the only ones to give me a
credit card.

I was filling my gas tank the other day, and when it got near the fifty dollar mark (around where I figured the pump should stop), I noticed that there was gas
all over the ground around me. -_- I'm pretty sure my car was leaking, though I haven't had any issues since then and the meter on my dash still says
full. But with gas prices this high the LAST thing I need is a hole in my gas tank.
Although, given the fact that my car is falling apart, it's not a very strange idea. It has a hard time driving the five minutes to work without stalling sometimes!

Gas is 4.07 here. NJ is cheaper at 3.89, so I filled up there the other day.

You must live near the state line?? I do too, IL - IN. So even though the gas for just regular unleaded is now 4.19, a lot of people come across to buy it from
IL because there are more taxes imposed on gas in IL, and the county tax, city tax, etc. Cigarettes are the same way...in IL a pack is like near $8 in places!
Over here it is maybe 4-something, around 3 for generic brands.....and then anyway with the 4th coming up, IN sells fireworks pretty freely nowadays, so people
travel from WI and MI even, to buy.

Do you know what ? This country is screwed - not only are out petrol prices something like $12/ gallon but they said on the news this morning that in London
someone is badly hurt by a knife- related incident every 56 minutes

Like I said before,with the oil companies doing this on purpose just to make money,they have failed to realize that by screwing the people at the gas
pump,those same people are going to cut back on non-essential things and that will eventually hurt small businesses that produce those items and it will
eventually snowball to bigger businesses.

Yesterday's Sunday paper was talking about fireworks businesses and the 4th in general....and it said that it is expected that there WILL be more people
around locally, rather than gone away for the holiday, because of the ever-rising gas prices.
I can only imagine what it will be in 10-yrs time too...hmm, let us all hope that this 'new enlightened consciousness' spoken of will be evident by then.

Very true,El. Everyone is feeling the squeeze. I continue to shop for the best bargains in food and thankfully,there are several stores near each other that
are in competition with each other and the prices of some of their stuff is really good.
