That could be it. Either way, I know I'm nearly 22 and I was raised on the classics - frankly, I'd MUCH prefer those channels to show the older shows
than the newer things. I can't believe there isn't more demand for the older shows

I like the idea of a station devoted to the classics of each decade. Kinda like "XM" for t.v. I'm glad T.V. Land is still showing some
classics, but now they've gone the reality-show route as well, which is disappointing. I'd much rather watch "I Love Lucy" than "Shear
Genius". I mean, a reality show compeititon about cutting hair?!?

It's like 80s shows are considered too "old" for them to play now. In the 80s, we saw a lot of 50s and 60s programs. So, if they are trying to appeal to those of us who were children in the 80s, I would think the 70s and 80s should be the main focus. The 90s are just too recent when looking at the original intention of Nick at Nite. And George Lopez--a show that was on in this decade!! It doesn't make sense. I love Leave it to Beaver and I Love Lucy, and I watch those when I catch them. Beaver seems to have been replaced in some time slots by other shows. I post on some "children of the 80s" boards, and we all want to see more 70s and 80s shows on these channels. NoraLou, I don't get the reality trend at all---VH1 seems to have been completely ruined by it!!! Did anyone notice that they have continued their "I Love the..." shows to now include "I love the new millenium"...who is nostalgic for the new millenium?? Are they that desperate for shows? Last night I had on the tv listings channel, and I saw something on Vh1's slot about a show which I assume was discussing 2005. I thought nostalgia came about in 20 year cycles, and 90s nostalgia seems a little too early. 2005 would just be ridiculous. Angela

Thinking about the "Fairy Tale" episode of The Monkees, I don't know if I would consider any part of it a direct interpretation of Cinderella, though it does have some elements in common with the Cinderella story. The Fairy of the Locket could be compared to Cinderella's fairy godmother, I suppose; Peter as the poor, lowly young man aspiring to win the love of the princess is sort of a reversal of the poor and lowly Cinderella aspiring to win the love of the prince, and the princess's carriage sort of reminds me of Cinderella's. I'd be very interested to know if you were able to use the episode in your paper or not and what comparisons or similarities you came up with if you did!

The problem is that it all boils down to what the networks think will be financially successful, and if they don't deem such an idea financially feasible, it won't happen. I have to say that I don't have enough time to even watch all the T.V. episode and other DVDs and videos that I own anymore -- let alone to seek out more stuff on T.V.! Lately I've been watching news programs a lot more -- something I've never spent much time doing before, but in this election year I find myself suddenly becoming a lot more interested in the political scene and have been trying to keep current with what is going on in the presidential campaigns and in other national and international news. (Does this mean I'm finally becoming a responsible grown-up?

I guess if we look at the other side of the coin,we may see a different point of view.
When the Monkees tv show was aired on Nick-At-Nite back in 1988,that was 20 years ago and in 1988,the Monkees show had been off the air for 20 years. Now it's 2008 and if we search for a show that is 20 years old, that would be from 1988. See what I mean? That channel is already 23 years old,so what was brand new 23 years ago on regular tv is considered a classic today.

On a related note, our local oldies station does the same thing now! I turn on the oldies station with the hope of hearing songs from the 50s and 60s - and
more and more they keep playing 80s music. The other day they were talking about the Fine Young Cannibals - quite a difference from, say, Buddy Holly.

As much as it pains me to say it, 80s music is considered oldies today. It's hard for me to believe sometimes, because I was a child in the 80s and it
doesn't seem so long ago. I used to listen to oldies music then-50s, 60s, and thought some of it was ancient yet also liked some at the same time. Now,
the music I heard then as new is oldies. Oldies. Some kids today probably think it's ancient. Ugh, it's hard for me to process sometimes
lol. I still think of 50s-70s as oldies, 80s as 80s, and 90s & today lumped together as sucky decades in general, full of mostly trite, banal pop/rnb/rap.
Last week, one of my childhood favorites, Debbie Gibson, celebrated her 20th anniversary since "Foolish Beat" went to number one. 20 years!?!

I still listen to and enjoy some 80s music by bands like The Jam,Split Enz,R.E.M,Bangles and Duran Duran. Some 80s music had incredible hooks. "Home Improvement" ran from 1991 to 1998,but it's on Nick-At-Nite all the time. If you look up the definition of "Classic",it says that it has to be 25 years old or older.

I heard "Walk This Way" on our local oldies station the other day. Don't get me wrong, I REALLY like classic rock and a lot of stuff from the 80s
- but I don't listen to the oldies stations for them! They're played enough on all the other local stations!

I know that I sound like a commercial whenever I say this...but that's yet another reason why I love satellite radio. Dedicated, commercial-free, channels
for each decade in the popular music era starting with the 40's and working on up. There is also a channel on XM, (Top Tracks, channel 46), that combines
all the great classic rock tracks from the 60's through the 80's in one place too, that usually plays some great stuff you don't hear all the time
on FM.

Regular radio is free. I know XM is much better than regular radio, but with the way everyone is cutting expenses thanks to the rising gasoline prices........

Ain't that the truth!
In the 90's a friend of one of my sons told me to give a listen to a great new band he discovered, and was asking how come they weren't on the radio regularly...well the band was the Beatles! Nowadays I have taken to listen to the oldies station 94.7 out of Chicago, because it plays songs from the late 60's through the 70's....the time when I was a teenager and young adult. I also listen to 97.1 the Drive and 97.9 the Loop, which are more rock album oriented. Those two will also play more recent music, so that I'm not completely out of the loop, lol.

rvm67 wrote: LOL! Just wondering, how old was he when he was mistaken about those groups being new? I liked The Beatles and Led Zeppelin as a teenager, but I knew what era they were from for a while. I've probably thought a song or artist was new when they weren't but I can't remember. Some people have been discussing the Miley Cyrus cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun". I heard a snippet of it and it's not bad, but can't compare to the original. You can hear it here-link. Someone posted that the original is not a classic, it's just a dumb catchy song from 25 years ago. Well, according to Ray's post, it is a classic then. Angela

Well, Angela, the boy was about 14, and all into Nirvana and Nine Inch Nails...you know, 90's grunge...and the Beatles Anthology stuff hadn't been on
the tv yet...he was fast discovering ALL the music you see, so for a short period he'd come to me with another band he'd heard, asking about it and
wanting to know about the history if there was one. I took in all that as a confirmation that rock and roll indeed never dies, lol.

Ah the grunge period...and gangsta rap...Spice Girls...the 90s were a terrible time to be a teenager, imo. Not that I didn't like Nirvana, but if it
hadn't been for groups like The Beatles, the Monkees, Led Zeppelin, 80s rock, etc. etc., I'd have been an even more miserable teen & early
20-something than I was lol
