Here is where we will see news of Michael's work as alerts come in from Neffie and the Ranchhandz at Videoranch.
"A final note. It has been said that The First National Band was one of the pioneers of Country Rock and was partly responsible for a shift in popular music. I count this as nonsense for two reasons. First, the classification of music by genre is silly and meaningless. Arbitrary categories such as Country Rock or R&B is fostered by schools, perpetuated by fools, creates havoc in the business of arts and tends to oppress artists. Even legitimate distinctions, such as opera from ballet serve only a limited purpose. The only way to understand a musical form is to listen to it, not talk about it." - Nez. August 16, 1993

Here's the new update on Rays from Videoranch!
Greetings! If you havent seen our Nez FAQ lately then you may not have heard the recent news; Nez has finished his album Rays, and it will become available after the first of the year (this time its really true!). Nez has been working on this album for years and we are all so excited that it is now complete! It will be available for download at all the download stores (iTunes, iTunes UK, Rhapsody, Napster, MSN, etc.) as well as on CD. Thats all the information we have right now but we will certainly let you know as we hear more. Right now were also having a sale on some of the classics The Newer Stuff is on sale for $8.95, regularly $12.95. The CD contains the song Cruisin (Lucy and Ramona and Sunset Sam a lot of people dont know the songs title is Cruisin), which happens to be our most popular song download. The Older Stuff is on sale for $6.95, regularly $10.95. This album includes the hit Rio, a song whose video can be found in the New York MOMA, where its considered a significant work of art. The Wichita Train Whistle Sings is on sale for $11.95, regularly $16.95. This is a Videoranch exclusive, recorded by Nez in 1967. A collection of classic Nez songs played by a very large band. A bit of trivia: a marching band used the arrangements from You Just May Be the One on this album and played it in the 1968 the Rose Bowl. The above albums, as well as all of Nez albums, are each only $9.99 when you download them and there are no shipping charges. Thanks Chris...Thats very kind.
I have had the urge to sit and start writing again. Maybe after all the holiday madness and if stuff ever calms down at work wher i can sit and focus in and outward to try and capture experience into tune. Trouble is now I have no way to record until I get a new desktop PC which may not be till after I get my Tax Refund. Also Ive been quite busy and time is something I havent had luxury of to even pick up the guitar. Plus not playing in a band regular anymore has me way out of practice. Music is a hobby of mine that kind of got left behind lately. I figure it will take me about as long as Nez to cut my first one . 10+ years? If it happens, I promise free promo Demos to all who ask for on but hold up on orders til I'm ready. ![]() |

Click here to check it out. Regards, The Videoranch Hands www.videoranch.com vrforeman@videoranch.com 8 Harris Court, Suite C1 Monterey, CA 93940 Phone: 831-373-3100 Fax: 831-373-3103 Toll Free: 1-866-727-2639 And this, posted at VR: April 3, 2006 - Michael Nesmith has just released his latest album Rays; a cinematic journey of sound with elements of swing, jazz and instrumental funk that come together to form what he calls "New Century Modern". Once again, Nesmith pioneers a new genre, contributing fresh, inventive and timeless dimensions to our current musical landscape. This beautifully packaged album comes with a 9 X 14 inch poster of the Drew Friedman Art Nez had commissioned for the album! For a time I thought Rays had come together differently than any other project I had worked on, until it dawned on me all the various works I had been involved in had happened the same way and doing Rays was simply the first time I had seen it. Rays was my own personal Copernican Shift. For years Rays laid around in bits and pieces, and there were long periods when I would put them all away, like disparate parts of disparate building blocks. As if one was a recipe, another was a blueprint, another was a map. I couldnt see how they fit together. I kept going, as much for not having anything else to do as for the curiosity of how it would all turn out, but I did keep going, and Im glad I did. It was when I was putting on the horn parts, dreaming of Memphis and Stax Volt that it all came together. It was as if I had come into the garage one evening, and was looking at the detritus of a failed effort laying all over the floor, when suddenly there was this array, a kind of order to it that I had never imagined. That was exciting. It felt new, and gave me the inspiration I needed to finish. This after four years of wandering in darkness --- which actually happened to be one of the lines from Rays. I had always imagined emergence as the gradual appearing of something that already exists but was just unseen. Rays was the first time I ever actually saw that happen. And now that Ive seen it I am aware that all the past works have happened the same way. "I love to put Henry Mancinis music on in a convertible with the top down. Hes one of my favorite composers the theme from Mr. Lucky, or you know, those great movie and TV theme songs he did. I put the top down on the convertible on a nice sunny day and drive along a country road somewhere, and I am literally and figuratively transported to another place. Thats what I hope will happen when people listen to Rays. That it's evocative, its transporting. The listener will find themselves in a place they cant get to any other way. And theyre really happy to be there, and the next thing you know, they move in, they plant a garden, they start hanging out there, and they got a little second home there, in Raysland." Michael Nesmith "I have wondered if I am trying to force a life. While the life I lead may not match the picture in my head, perhaps the one offered me is just as full of joy, its pigments just as bright, just not what I expected."

Hello Videorancher!
There's a new interview of Nez you might enjoy reading. It's a word for word conversation between Nez and writer Will Harris. Go to the Nez FAQ and click on the Bullz-Eye link underneath the first Question. Great news for The Prison Fans! Nez went back to the original multi-tracks of The Prison, made a new digital transfer of it, and is now remixing and remastering it. I heard a little bit of it this weekend (Marie's Theme and Hear Me Calling) and it sounds AWESOME! A quick bit of news for the United Kingdom and the rest of the EU: Edsel Records will begin re-issuing the following Nez albums in 2007: The Prison, The Garden, Timerider Soundtrack, Tropical Campfire's, From a Radio Engine to a Photon Wing, Infinite Rider on the Big Dogma, Wichita Train Whistle Sings, and Live at the Britt. We expect them to be great re-issues, with lots of extras, and liner notes written by Nez. That's the news for now! Sincerely, Navajo Slim ![]() |

As exciting as it sounds, I don't understand why Nez is re-mixing/ re-mastering The Prison again? I think the 1990 version is superb. We shall see.
If he remasters anything, why not The First National Band albums? I love to hear these with great sound. Also why does the UK get the re-issues with (maybe) bonus stuff and liner notes by Nez? Hopefully these will include out takes. |

Well, yeah those are all good points. It's kind of like the whole Rhino thing that I like to complain about all over again. We'd, in essence, be buying the same stuff all over again for a few lost nuggets of gold.
This time, however, there is a big HOWEVER. Between 1999 and 2001, Camden Records in the UK reissued Nez's first 6 solo albums post-Monkees (i.e. from Magnetic South through Pretty Much Your Standard Ranch Stash). These reissues were also of the type that hyped remastered sound, new liner notes and bonus tracks. The big difference between these albums and every other reissue out there is that these delivered in a big way what they promised. The sound quality, in particular, is absolutely pristine on the Camden reissues. It blows every other Nez issue of the old albums right out of the water. I'm one of those types of people who sees the "digitally remastered" claim on just about every reissue I buy, only to bring it home, play it and shrug my shoulders because I really can't tell the difference from the originals. These are different, and a vast improvement from everything that had gone before. If these new reissues next year of the later stuff are anything like these, I for one will be a very happy camper. There isn't any sort of shipping cost when you order from Videoranch, is there? It only says the shipping weight but not if the shipping costs something (I think it would be said if it did, but I need to make sure before I order anything. Cause if I buy, say, two cds at different times, I'd like to know if the possible shipping costs would altogether be the same as when I buy the cds at the same time.)
Couldn't find an answer at Videoranch, so I thought I'd ask here since many of you probably have ordered something from there. |
