Hi everybody. Sorry I haven't been around much. I've been busy job hunting and planning my fiance's and my trip to Tennessee to visit one of my best friends from high school. We're still considering moving there and we plan to visit my friend from Feb. 7 to Feb. 22 for a combination of visiting and feeling it out (we will probably do some job hunting while we're there as well). I seem to have terrible luck with jobs though. It seems like every time I get a job, I wind up with a jerky boss (my first job when I was in high school and a job I had just out of high school), the company has financial problems and has to either go out of business or lay people off, or it turns out to be a scam (I do check the Better Business Bureau and do search engine reviews on companies, but sometimes, scams still manage to make it through the systems). I did apply to some jobs on freelance sites, but the only thing I got offered was a captcha entry job that was a strain on my eyes and I would not have been able to make anything more than $6 or $7 a week which I was told by multiple people that it is not worth straining your eyes for that little amount of money.
On the potential bright side, one of the places I posted was Facebook and another friend from high school said she has some transcription for me and is going to send the first one on Monday. That is going to be using my business' services. Keith (my fiance), Pete (one of my best friend's from high school), and I are still working on making the partnership official (after hours of trying to find anything, we finally found out we had to go to an attorney for the partnership. We have a family friend who's an attorney so I made an appointment with him. He told me all we had to do is write up a partnership agreement form and have all three of us sign it and when I asked how much I owed him, he said he was doing it free of charge because my Dad is like a brother to him). When my other friend asked what the rate and the turnaround time was for the transcriptions, I told her what we had decided on a rate based on what we saw other companies charging and I also told her that I had never calculated the turnaround time before (I just did the transcriptions and turned them in), but I gave her an estimate based on my typing speed and allowing for rewinding the file to make sure I get all the words right. When we looked up the transcription rates for other companies, we saw a lot of them were charging $4 to $10 for 1,000 words so we decided to make our rate $3 for every 1,000 words to be competitive and to make it easily divisible by three. Obviously, in this case, we won't know how much the total price of the transcription is going to be until after it is done, but at least it will be something and every little bit helps.
