"Wanted, babysitter for 2 adorable children, 5 yrs. and 15 months. Excellent pay!" Micky read the sign out loud. It had been tacked to a bulletin board outside the little mom and pop corner grocery. They had stopped their for milk, bread and eggs. "There's a phone number, too. I think we should call."
"I don't know, man," Mike shook his head. "I mean, takin' care of kids and all..."
Davy rolled his eyes, "Oh Mike, there's nothing too it. You've just got to play with the kids is all, feed them and put them to bed."
"It does say 'excellent pay' and we could use the money," Peter gently pointed out, knowing this kind of logic worked best with Mike.
"Alright, take down the sign. Micky, you can call when you get home."
Micky duly placed the call to a Mrs. Bailey and grinned as he hung up the receiver, "Mrs. Baily told us to be there at 5:00 on Saturday night so we can meet the kids and she can show us around a little before she has to leave at 5:30."
At 5 o'clock sharp on Saturday the Monkees pulled up to a modest home on a quiet, residential street. Micky confidently knocked on the door.
"WOOF!" barked a dog who sounded so vicious, they all took a step back and re-considered taking this job. The door opened and a gorgeous, tall, leggy blonde appeared in the doorway. (Okay, okay, would you believe a cute, medium-height, strawberry blonde?) She's one hot mama! thought Micky.
"Hi," she greeted them cheerfully. "I'm Nora and that attack dog you just heard is-" she opened the door a little wider to reveal a gentle looking Golden Retriever. "Happy. He barks big but he's a sweet dog. Sorry he sounds like a Rottweiler. Come on in. Which of you is babysitting?"
"Uh, all of us," replied Micky, wondering if he'd done something wrong. "We work best as a team."
Nora shrugged, a little amused at the thought of her kids needing a whole team of babysitters when she did the majority of the childcare by herself. Just then a chubby little toddler whose hair was the same shade as his mom's came running up to her and she scooped him up playfully in her arms before he could dash out the door. She set him on her hip in a motherly gesture. "This is J.J. He's a busy little guy and as you can probably tell, he likes to eat."
"He and Mick should get along famously then," Mike smirked.
"And Heather's outside on the swingset," she continued, leading the group through the house, which was kept very clean (proof that this is indeed, fiction!) They looked out the backdoor window to see a blonde little girl hanging upside down from the trapeze bar. "I swear that child is part monkey," she laughed. "Come on inside, Heather and meet your new babysitters."
Heather landed on her feet like a cat and ran inside, eyes dancing with excitement, "Hi, Mommy. Who are they?"
"This is Micky, Peter, Mike and Davy. They're going to take care of you tonight."
"Why are there so many of them?" asked the girl candidly. When Lindsey or Meghan or Erin comes they just come by themselves."
"Well, you see we heard about how much fun you and your brother were and no one wanted to miss out," explained Mike, silently patting himself on the back for giving such a good answer.
"That is so COOL!" she enthused, jumping about a foot in the air. "Who's gonna help me with my homework?"
"I guess I could," replied Peter. "Isn't that cute, pretending she has homework."
Nora chuckled, "She's not pretending. She really does have homework. And I'll tell you, it's not just cutting and pasting." She continued showing them around the house and how everything worked, from the diaper genie to the flat-screen t.v. that took 4 remotes to operate!
"I'll leave you some money so that you can order a pizza or two and the kids can have some fruit with it. Do you have any questions?"
"No, I think we've got everything," replied Davy confidently. "You just enjoy yourselves and have fun. Don't worry about a thing."
"Alright. I'll let you get acquainted more with the kids while I get ready. My husband's out running some errands but he'll be here shortly." She handed over the baby to Micky and headed to her room.
More later!
