I think Shane was mostly into this, not sure about the rest of you. You guys can listen for free on music.aol.com and search for XM Station 7 on Saturday from noon-3 ET and on Sunday on Channel 8 from noon-3pm ET. On channel 7, they replay AT 40 shows from 1970-1979 and on Channel 8, shows from 1980-1988. This week, I am listening to 2/26/1977. I recall some of this music firsthand, but I think most of it I learned about later from oldie stations. 2/26/1977 show is being played on 3/1/08 on XM channel 7. I enjoy the trivia mostly and some music I rarely hear. Unfortunately, some of the music played has been played into the ground over the years. Oh well, take the good with the bad. I used to listen to AT40 on a very regular basis from 1983 until about 1986, before and after that was very spotty at best. Casey Kasem's voice brings back a lot of familiarity for me. I usually do housework while listening to this or I visit ML. Maybe some of these songs bring back memories for some of you. Aerosmith's "Walk This Way" Right now, they are playing Aerosmith's "Walk This Way" which was redone with Run DMC in the 1980s and reentered the charts. Crazy video, too for the remake. I did not know the original song from the 70s. George Harrison - Crackerbox Palace This song brings back memories from 1987. I saw a VH1 special about George Harrison, I believe, specifically, and this weird video came on. Definitely an odd song that charted and very odd video. Dazz - Brick This song is sampled quite a bit. I like how Negativland sampled it on their material. I do not recall this funky song from the time. 3/8/80 - XM radio Channel 8 - replayed on 3/2/08 http://www.charismusicgroup.com/Cue%20Sheets/03-08-80%20Cue%20Sheet.pdf Kenny Loggins - "This Is It" - I still love this song. I had it on a 45, one of my earliest 45 purchases. Queen - "Crazy Little thing called Love" - I haven't heard this song much over the years as played on oldies stations. I don't think I had ever heard that song before. I also liked the story about ZZ Top. I never imagined a time where they weren't with their trademark beards. AT 40 3/4/72 Sunday on XM channel 8 at 3/9/08 they played AT 40 03/05/88 AT 40 3/5/88 At this point, I had lost a lot of interest in current pop music, though you find some good gems here and there When We Was Fab - George Harrison - a very pleasant nod to Beatlemania. I had almost changed the channel over to something else, but there seemed to be enough good ones to keep me tuned. BTW, 1988 was the last year Casey hosted AT40 before Shadoe Stevens took the reigns, so you'll not find any shows later than '88 that will play. Shane The lost album. In stores June 17th.

IIRC, Casey walked out because he wanted more $$. Not sure when in 1988, maybe by the fall? - Kasem did another countdown later, forgot what it says, but I think I read about it on his wiki entry.

The Elvis decade. '55 is considered the first year of the rock-music era. I occasionally will listen to 40s and 50s music on XM, but I am more of a 60s-80s music fan.

I also enjoyed hearing Chicago in the countdown. Chicago 17 was a huge album, and not surprisingly because of that, Peter Cetera's last LP with the group before he went solo. CHI 17 produced 4 big hits, "Along Comes A Woman" (on today's show), "Stay The Night", "Hard Habit To Break", and "You're The Inspiration". But it also signaled an era, despite the group's big comeback, where the horns were playing less and less a part of the music, and the group was becoming increasingly known as a "ballads band". Their producer at the time, David Foster, had a lot to do with that. It's very much a double edged sword--without the Foster years, it's almost certain that the group would have disbanded by some point, and Chicago probably still wouldn't be around today, but this "ballads" image has been haunting them ever since. I recall that there was a different version of that song that had more horns on it, or maybe I am wrong? I think your assessment is probably right about Chicago turning into a ballad band.

Nope, you're absolutely right. There was an extended dance mix made, but I have never heard it on radio. I do have it on a rather obscure Japanese compilation, but it's a mix that is indeed very hard to locate. I think your assessment is probably right about Chicago turning into a ballad band. This is where the long lost album "Stone Of Sisyphus" album comes in to play. This was slated to be Chicago 22 circa 1993. The band, totally frustrated over their image at this point, decided to just pull out all the stops and record an album that actually rocked and showed their abilities as musicians. The record company rejected it out of hand, syaing that it wasn't "commercial" enough. Songs from the "Stone" project have found their way onto different collections through the years, but it finally looks like Rhino's going to release it as an album for the first time ever this summer....about 15 years later. Lots of good stuff, some throw-aways though like Pac-Man Fever. The Go Go's We Got the Beat is one of my all time favs. Genius of Love, Tom Tom Club, and The Other Woman - Ray Parker. - some songs I don't recognize, however. It was kind of neat to hear the theme from Magnum PI by Mike Post in the countdown, as well as the Beatles' movie song medley. It's easy to forget, too, how country music tended to cross over to the pop chart in the 80's. In this countdown we had Willie Nelson singing "You Were Always On My Mind" and the Oak Ridge Boys doing "Bobbie Sue". I don't think XM has played today's countdown before. It sounded like a "new" old show to me I think this was a "new" old show, Shane. I was surprised at the number of instrumentals: Magnum PI, Pop Goes the Movies and Chariots of Fire. The Magnum IP song was interesting for me, I always remembered the show's theme, but I don't recall this song on the radio back in those days by Mike Post. I am sure his other one for Hill Street Blues faired much better just a few years earlier. The last big charting instrumental I recall was Miami Vice in 1985, afterwards, I think instrumentals very rarely charted at all. Instrumental charting haydays were the 60s-80s. I had the 45 for the Beatles Movie Medley, so I do recall airplay for that one. I think I scratched it up really bad or broke it later, as I didn't always take care of my records. I don't remember if anything else Beatl-ish was released at that time for that Beatles 45. Country music songs were still around and I liked a lot of them, I do remember Bobby Sue IIRC, I believe '84 was the last year for much of any country cross overs charting into the top 40. Big disco year. AT 40 - 04/11/81 - I had several 45s from this countdown. Terry Gibbs, Juice Newton, Dolly Parton, Eric Clapton ... some great tunes here. MTV went on the air in August of this year. For his trivia time, Casey mentioned Neil Diamond's early failure in 1966, where he received a .15 royalty check from Columbia Records after a failed 45 release. Diamond was also dropped from the label; he later signed back on with Columbia records after some success. Casey never mentioned the success "Cherry, Cherry" or "I am a Believer" - I thought those were rather pivotal moments for Neil Diamond's early career, oh well..
