DIVOON POST-ACTION BLOTTER - DAVY JONES, ROCKER!
(Freestyle personal observations which will be wordy enough, I'm sure!)
November 7, 2008
~ Karen (PeterTorksgal1970) and Carolyn (Mickysgirl10475) are certainly energetic gals with a lot of stamina! After already spending time at Disneyland, they bore up the 8+ hours we spent together in traffic, waiting on line to get into the show, putting up with my bursts of chatter, and the rush of overeager fangirls attempting to usurp the hard-gained viewpoint staked out before the whole shebang began. Apparently a day at Lego Land and more Disneyland were on the calendar for them as well. They both looked great and were in a lot fresher condition than I was at the end of it all. I'm still recuperating from my attempts to dance.
~ Six (my husband) and Big Flora had an exchange about his being married to a Monkees fan, and perhaps the necessity for putting me on a leash. It was hard to tell. The music was blasting pretty loudly during the meals. I suppose for a concert supper club that's a requirement. But an interesting angle to that is that it afforded some intimacy. People at the other tables were so busy trying to hear one another, they couldn't really hear us. (Of course, it was a little hard for me to hear us, too!)
~ The Canyon Club, to its credit, presents many top-line acts all year around, and the food is okay, although more limited than the website's menu presents as far as being able to order appetizers and the like. Also, there's no allowance for economizing. So I'm advising that if base price for Standing Room Only is all you can afford, have your dinner at a more quiet venue and show up when you're finished for the SRO, because it would appear there's no restriction to rushing the stage if you can manage to get to the front without aggressively antagonizing anyone at the ringside tables over it.
~ A fellow named John Pieplow and his band were the opening act. Six especially enjoyed the good-looking ladies in the band; I think they have some good potential!
~ What can I say about the headliner that hasn't already been said, except that I sure didn't age as well as he did from the thirty-plus years since I saw him last perform live!
~ It was hard to tell who was having the better time -- the audience or the Jonesy. One thing southern California has plenty of is pretty women, and there were quite a few in the crowd that night, all of them singing along! He seemed to enjoy the attention as he always did, even firing leering barbs at a couple of the ladies being a bit more obvious in their ploys to catch his eye. Six himself was deeply jealous.
~ The man still has that voice, I'm happy to say! We were treated to a steady slew of Monkees hits, plus a few favorite solos, including a rousing rendition of "Consider Yourself". The band was tremendous! I recognized Aviva, always in great form, that woman! I will rely on the experts who were there and at other venues to please find out the names of the other fine entertainers? (Six thought that guitarist kicked butt and that Davy sure did come off as a fine rock-n-roller!)
~ I had thought the venue was for 21-years-old and over, yet I saw some in the audience considerably younger. I can only hope those kids' parents weren't too surprised when Davy went into his barrage of naughty and at times bawdy jokes that sent me into fits of shocked laughter - no real obscene language, but plenty of suggestive with slaps of ribaldry here and there, and not exactly what would be known as "politically correct"! His drummer, his age, sex, his daughters, St. Peter...nothing was sacred. Amidst the guffawing groans in response, he'd laugh and respond, "Is this thing on? You Americans, so uptight!"
~ His daughters were in the audience that night, which meant no meet-and-greet since he was gear to spend time with them. (At that point, I myself was ready for a nap!) Even without the meet-and-greet with Davy, I sure had a great time hanging out with fellow fans and getting wacky with them at the Canyon Club. And Davy and team were just divoon - hope to see him again in the near future, that was energetic! Some items to forward to Jonesy were passed along, and I'm hoping to secure autographs if there's a lucky opening when I attend "Head" in Hollywood on Wednesday. So wish me luck with that one, I'll be posting an after-action report for that one too! (And pass the multi-vitamins, I need more energy!)
Most of our photos came out like this...the man doesn't stand still long enough for mere amateur digital cameras to get a good shot! (But this still looks kind of cool, don't you think?)
Here's one that's a bit better.
Davy was driving the women nuts. Let's give a big shout-out to all the guys who support the quests of us crazy fangirls.
Davy got a stuffed penguin from a gal in the audience!

. I was so embarrassed lol. Here are some of my photos I took.
