I got a phone call from my mom this afternoon. My dad has stage 3 melanoma. It's been one of those days. I think it's going to be one of those
weeks. The spot is on the top of his head so I'm not sure if it's operable or not; we'll find out when he sees the head and neck surgeon this
week. Then it's onto the oncologist....

My dad goes in for surgery tomorrow. The doctor will remove all of the melanoma he can, then explore the glands to see if it has spread. The doctor is
optimistic that he can get everything with one surgery and there's a good possibility no further treatment will be required. Here's hoping!

Thanks, Tom! I'm kind of glad that my daughter's field trip (see "The Most Popular..." if you want details) is tomorrow so my mind and hands
will be occupied instead of just waiting and worrying.
ETA 11/11/09 :My dad got the results of the biopsy today. It looks as if the surgery was succesful in removing all the cancer!  Kaiser is sending it out to
an independent lab just to make absolutely sure, but at this stage, he's not likely to need any further treatment. Thanks so much everyone for your
postitive vibes, thoughts and prayers.

In fact, we did hear back from the other lab only yesterday and it did verify the original results 
This epsisode with my dad is a good reminder to wear your hats and sunscreen!
